New Problem

I brought our Border Collie to get his teeth cleaned. The vet called and said that the flap in his throat that keeps food from going down the windpipe is deformed and is calcifying. Hank has had his teeth cleaned before and they never noticed anything. He doesn't seen to be having a problem eating yet. He is 8 or 9 years old. The vet did a biopsy and set it off to LSU. I don't like it when he has to be put under for his teeth cleaning. He has such a blank look when I pick him up. Not like him at all.

Here's hoping that Hank is ok - what did the vet say should be done about it? Or did they do anything? Never heard of that.

Keeping you and Hank in my thoughts and prayers.

I have never heard of this either. I don't know that there is anything that can be done. It doesn't seem to be bothering him now. If the vet school says anything I'll post it.

My Kuvasz had a problem with that flap (epiglottis) not closing properly. Raising his food and water dishes helped some.
My dogs get raw knuckle bones to keep their teeth cleaned. Works like a charm.

Let us know what they say, Martha. I've never heard of that either. Hopefully they can fix Hank up.

Really hopping for good test results. Never heard of that problem in dog either tho I do know of a case in human of malfunctioning flap.

Hank doesn't have cancer but there doesn't seem to be anything they can do for this condition. It doesn't seem to be bothering him yet so we will just have to watch him. The next time I go to Pesmart I will look for a tall feed bowl. His water is already about 18 inches off the ground.

Well, thank goodness he doesn't have cancer and as long as he can swallow and the food stays down hopefully he'll be ok!

What Sharon said. It's definitely a mixed blessing - it's not worse, but sad that it's a problem at all for him. Hopefully he'll continue as he has and not have any new problems from it.

Glad everything so far is manageable, never fun when one of our babies is not well.
