William's birthday

Today is William's birthday. Not really, of course. He was a stray; we have no idea when he was born. This is my mother's birthday, so she shared it with William when she was alive.

I sure am thinking about them together today. William was really strong and vigorous when he was young -- the kind of dog who went over a six-foot fence without a second thought. Mom was pretty fragile by then. One day, William and I were playing tag in my mother's back yard, which involved him giving me lots of full-body slams. Mom came out to say hi, and he gleefully launched himself at her. Then, in mid-air, he remembered. He twisted himself and landed beside her instead of on her. She laughed so hard while she told him what a good dog he was.

We had some good laughs, Mom and I.
