I have a traveling partner, My cat Midnight. She has to take meds everyday so she goes where I go.

I took her of course on my first solo trip. Well I got out of the rv because of a blown tire and she jumped out the door and ran under the motorhome which was parked on the side of I-5. Scared me to death...she screamed and hid under the motorhome...finally got her and put her straight into her cage.'

My lesson, if I need to get out during traveling....have the cat in her cage. She never ran out the motorhome again.

It would have made me very sad to loose her....

You are very, very lucky! So glad nothing bad happened! I would have been in an absolute panic!

So, so glad she was too scared to go anywhere and didn't get onto the highway! I'm guessing she might not even think about running out that door again, but putting her in the cage will be so much better for your sake!

I am most comfortable traveling with my dogs when they are in their crates. They are not likely to jump out but my imagination can think of the unlikely and disastrous...... I like them to figure out that they are not moving out that door without their leashes on...... That is another reason why, though I have admired the RVers that use ex-pens to create small private "yards" around their rigs so that their dogs can enter and exit the door like at home, I have never been seriously tempted to teach my dogs that exiting out the door without a leash is permitted....

Peaches knows to wait at the door until she's told it's ok. But occasionally when someone comes to the door that she knows and likes, she gets so excited and jumps out to greet them. Usually she then jumps back in and looks at me ...uh huh, yes, Peaches, you were wrong lol There are times when I call her out without her leash and she won't come - I think she fears me some still from the days when she was abused - even if that never came from me ... On the other hand, she has gotten so that she is so strong-willed with me in other areas that I know she's not really afraid of me. That said, I still worry about her running out. And my door latch sometimes doesn't connect properly, so I've gotten in the habit of keeping it locked even when sitting inside most of the time, or latched another way - cuz I'd be terrified of her discovering if she pushed it, gently, it just might open for her.

Nice to have so many cat/dog lovers here....I love mine dearly and yes when she ran out it really scared me.

I'm glad to hear Midnight was OK. I know the panic that sets in.

Before I got my camper, I was driving from Florida to Virginia with a friend and her dog Dugan, aka S**t Head. We had stopped at a rest area along I-95, the humans and dogs both had bathroom breaks and lunch. Getting back into the van, all was going smoothly, my dog was on the seat behind the driver and SH was up front with her. Both dogs still had their leashes on. I was in the back, getting the necessary replenishments for the front cooler, (It was a 2 cooler trip), with the back doors open. All of a sudden there was a commotion and SH flew by me and out the van. I closed the back doors and took off after Dugan. I'm sure it was a sight to behold! He was heading for the highway, but got scared by a big truck that had just come off the highway. He ran back toward the picnic area and stopped by a table. There was a family having lunch and the mother was able to entice Dugan with some food. These things happen so fast and our reaction time is so slow. We made it back to Virginia with out further incident. That is the story of how Dugan got his nickname. Linda

I'm so glad that it turned out OK. Tyler has anxiety attacks in a crate. He has a safety car harness that I tether when it is a solo trip. He is not allowed out without a leash as well.
