Why is Cooper doing this now?

Postby OutandAbout » Fri Aug 02, 2013 2:46 pm

Cooper, the only female of my three dogs, has been watching her brothers for awhile now. She has developed a fascination about their ability to lift their leg and P. Last week I noticed Cooper attempting to lift her leg while P-ing. She is still squatting, but also lifting her leg. I wonder if she is going to practice until she can lift her leg and lean the way her brothers do. (Cooper and Ozzy are 5 years old and Trent is 10.)

Once she gets this system perfected, maybe she has plans for some kind of payback. There is absolutely no aggression from her towards the other two at any time, she plays nicely with them and will share toys and even her food. Maybe she is learning this because she doesn't like getting wet from the morning dew and finally noticed her brothers don't have this problem. Do dogs even think like this?

Does this new behavior mean anything, if so,what should I do? If not, then I'll just continue to watch her develop this new skill.

Thanks. Linda

I've always had females and have seen several do that. They never progressed to raising the leg up like males though. I don't think you have anything to worry about. It certainly doesn't hurt her.

naw,, don't worry, other females will lift a leg slightly slightly too but the funniest thing I ever saw was my cocker spanial (fe) marking
the tree after my male had p'd on it.......she backed up to the tree and climbed it backwards with both back feet to p on it. I only saw
her do that ONCE but it was hilarious! I guess she wanted to show him who was boss.

I wouldn't worry unless she starts watching you & tries to climb up on the toilet!

Thanks ladies. I will just amuse myself watching her then.

I would gladly flush for her after she uses the toilet.

Scarlett squats and then sticks one hind leg straight out. At first I wondered, too. Now, she can pee standing on her head if she'll just do it outside. I'm on my way to post a question about using puppy pads.

Ha! My little poodle routinely lifts one foot, and occasionally leans forward and lifts both rear legs & balances on her front legs. Think circus elephant.

Jazzy will lift one leg and she will mark over a spot that Oscar has marked on the ground. She keeps trying to exert dominance and sometimes wins.

Peaches sometimes lifts a leg - not really unusual for females, especially if they want to be the dominant one. And she does p over other dogs p ... all the time. Nothing to worry about. Often females that do this will prefer male dogs to other female dogs unless the other female dogs immediately agree to being subservient.
