Pictures as promised. I took them this morning after their vet visit. They are still in the "We just look like funny colored gerbils!" faze.

I drove down last night so that I could stay with them over night and Lyn could get a good night's sleep after being up for a day and a half..... :)

OHMAHGOSH - they are so cute. I still don't get how you get puppies that color from a mother her color.
BUt who cares - they are just adorable!

The color genes that makes an orange roan or a reds are all recessive. If you produce red or OR you know that they received a recessive from both sire and dam. Both dogs have to carry for the recessive in order to get the color to be expressed in any of the puppies. The solid black and the Blue Roan color genes are dominant. I don't think the sire this time even "carries" for OR but he had never been used before so if there is an OR anywhere back in the generations behind him it can be be passed along as a hidden recessive for generations until it finds another recessive. (Just think of it as high school biology class about genetics!  )

When Blondie (an orange roan) was bred to Izzy's sire who was a blue roan.....we knew that Nickolas carried for Orange Roan.....Then you deal with statistical probability as to if the gene with match up and be expressed. Three of the four pups in that litter where OR.....a much higher percentage than average.....

I LOVE puppy breath!

What a beauteous litter! And the mom was so good to put those collars on them so she could tell them apart!

Lyn put the ribbons on so she could identify them quickly. By saturday she could identify them by their spots and dots. That and the one boy quickly got the nick name " the big guy". :)

Te first week or so, they get weighed twice a day to be sure that all that nursing is really working for them. If a pups begins to have trouble one of the first signs is lack of weight gain. It helps to be able to track their progress individually.
