Just saw this scary story on my ferret forum but it is about dogs... something I never would have thought about but very important for dog owners to know.

Thanks for the warning. NOW, lets talk about cats with collars - particularly dangerous as cats jump on and off things and those collars can get caught and choke them to death. the ONLY collar any cat should wear is one that is elastic and would stretch to allow the cat to squeeze out of it.

Altho my gang is chipped, and only one (PePe d'terrior) even attempts a break for it when the front door is open, I like the idea of them having a tag on their collar. But the tag got caught in the crate one day and he was screaming and throwing himself wildly before I could get him uncaught. No more collars indoors. There are Petsafe KeepSafe Break-Away Collar that provide that margin of safety so if they do get caught, the collars release. They got them on Amazon. That being said, collars and leashes are not good for my other little guys with their puny necks. I use harnesses (Petego Airness Harness) that is closed with Velcro. With these I can yank one of my little guys up into my arms if they are threatened (attack by big dogs, etc) without worrying about breaking their neck.

I like using a harness especially for little dogs, even for training. The obedience class I was in the instructor suggested the little ones wear harness so their necks weren't injured. I have tried just about all the ones available on Toby because I could find the style I wanted until just recently on eBay. They can also be ordered at petstore.com if you don't want to go through eBay. The picture doesn't match the color described but the description is the color you get. So easy to put on and off no pulling their legs through straps. Oh and they are very inexpensive.
Here is a link. You have to measure around the dog and then add a few inches. Toby is about 21 around so I ordered him a 24".

Mitch check out https:/dachshunddelights.com . I have one for all my dogs, even my Shepherd/lab mix. They work great. I have never had a problem with them coming undone (velcro) and they are strong. I could pick up one of the smaller dogs by the D-ring if needed. They come in mesh fabric or solid/printed fabric. Hope the link works. Linda

I wish I could find the harness I had for Tips somewhere... no clue who made it - and gave it away as it was for a BIG dog. But it was such a soft fabric. He actually would come up when I picked it up and lift one front paw, then the other to put on. So cute. And he was so sensitive, I was surprised when it never rubbed him raw, etc. I'll look into the doxie ones.

I've never had a problem with the collars and catching, but Peaches is rarely anywhere I have to worry about that. She feels nekkid without her collar - wants it on. Funny cuz if I try to put anything else on her she thinks I'm nuts, but wants her collar.

Mine know that the collar is the necessary step to the leash and then THE WALK! Peaches would never want to not be ready for the next walk!
