Housebreaking a two-year-old dog

Sadie is a Belgian Malinois mix. Guess that walking for a while is not so uncommon then. She sounds like Peaches - even if it has been a really long time, she needs to walk quite a ways before she goes. It's almost like she doesn't know how to start it on her own - that her body just has to 'do it' when it's good & ready. Wouldn't trade her for the world though - she's definitely a keeper - slow pee/poop & all.

I've known one Belgian Malinois, a retired military dog and just the sweetest thing. It's too early to tell what habits Scarlett has. We went for our first real walk this evening and she did pretty well.

Interesting that you said that, Nikki. One lady at the grand canyon asked if she could pet Sadie. She said she looked just like a dog she had years ago - sweetest pet she ever had!!! Must be a trait of the Malinois. She is very, very loving.

And the world knows I feel the same about Peaches. Actually, who knows what exercise I'd get if she didn't have to walk, walk, walk lol

Thank you for taking in an adult, so many just want a puppy.

Crate, constant trips outside and when she does do right, PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE and maybe add a treat so she'll understand what you want her to do.

I guess Scarlett is an adult. She's so puppyish that I forget. Puppy or adult, she's turning out to be a very good, smart dog. It's possible that we've worked out a schedule I can be consistent with and still get my daily stuff done, no accidents for two days. I've done a lot of reading about chihuahuas and mini dachshunds, so I don't expect that she will ever let me know when she needs to go out. It's all about me providing opportunities. Good news is that now she's more settled and feeling safer she sleeps a lot. My downstairs is really just one room, so it's easy to watch her and Olive, too. Seems like I've had them both forever and I pray they'll be with me for the rest of forever. Oh, yeah, Olive has taught Scarlett to walk on the leash. For as long as Scarlett can keep up, she trots along beside Olive or right behind. Then she rides the rest of the way on Mom's shoulder.

One will help train the other, Beck was almost two when I got him and he stayed in Alexis' shadow at first til he got comfortable.
