Buster is very sick!

Postby BarbaraRose » Thu Jul 22, 2010 11:34 pm

I am laying here with my ferret Buster on my chest, wondering if he will make it thru the night.
About an hour ago he started choking and pawing at his mouth and coughing up foamy stuff. I checked his mouth and throat but didn't see anything. I called my regular vet at home and he gave me some suggestions but basically said "good luck". I owe him money so I think he doesn't want to do anything more for my animals. Normally, he would meet me at his office for an emergency visit. I also called two emergency clinics and both told me they don't treat ferrets. So I am on my own with him until morning when I can hopefully, get him in to my ferret vet (his voicemail just refers me to the emergency clinics). I just hope Buster hangs on that long. Now, he is just completely lethargic, can't walk when he tries, refuses any water, food or treats. So I will be laying here with him thru the night and hope he makes it. Why do these guys always get sick on Holidays, Sundays or late at night??

I don't know why - but they do - pick those times. I'm going to have all my good feelings headed your way - for Buster to pull through. It's so hard to watch our babies when they're sick. C'mon Buster - hang in there!

I'm so sorry that Buster isn't doing good tonight. I'm glad you're there with him to comfort him even if there's nothing physical you can do but get him seen as soon as you can tomorrow. Stay strong Buster!

Hope your sweet little Buster manages through the night and gets to feeling better in no time. Good thing he has a Mommy to care and love him like you do.

Well, so far he has made it thru the night but still not doing good at all. He is vomiting blood and has black diarhea so not a good sign at all. Still can't get him to eat or drink anything. He is very dehydrated. The vet opens in an hour so I will be there waiting when they open. I am thinking he has a blockage of some kind, maybe something he ate...
I feel like a train wreck this morning. Got a few hours of sleep but just off and on, waking up to any little noise he made. I may have to go into work late today so I can get some more sleep in depending on what happens at the vet. I am scheduled to work 8 hours today, 9 hours tomorrow and 9 hours on Sunday, so I need to get caught up on sleep or I will be sick myself! Right now, my priority is Buster.
Will let you know what happens at the vet...

I'm glad Buster made it through the night. Now if he can hold on and get help from the vet. I sure hope so.

And, yes, make sure you get some rest - don't want to hear that you're in the hospital!

Sending only good thoughts towards you and Buster.

Awww...poor Buster! Yes, it does sound like something he ate. Those ferrets can get into anything. Keep us posted on what's going on.

Well, shortly before I left for the vet, I got Buster to drink some water and then I added some of his kibble to it to softnen it and he ate a little of that too, so that was a good sign. I dropped him at the vet at 7:30 since my vet wasn't in yet. He called a little later to tell me that he thinks there are 2 possible things going on. One is Buster's blood sugar was at 46 so he suspects he has Insulinoma (pancreatic cancer) which can cause similar symptoms. Also, he said he could feel somthing in his stomach which could be a small blockage of some sort, maybe something he ate. So they are going to do blood tests and take an ex-ray and let me know what the results are of those, and go from there. (so much for my savings account!)
Got a couple more hours of sleep in but still feel very tired. Not sure how I will be able to pick Buster up from the vet since I work until 9 tonight and start at 9 tomorrow. I might have my pet sitter pick him up for me and bring him to my place since she still has the key to my apartment, and she lives close to the vet's office.
Thank you for all your well-wishes and encouragement! I love these little guys and they are so fragile!
