Wild ferrets!

Here is a cute clip from a TV news station, with two very crazy European Polecats running amoke in the studio! My ferrets are decendants of these guys, as are all domesticated ferrets. I love the colors on these two! My guys put on a show like that for me every morning and evening! However, they don't raise their tails in the air like that, unless they are backing into a corner to do their "thing". Enjoy!

Okay Barbie...I am finally going to plead guilty of being totally ignorant when it comes to ferrets! How do you housebreak them? Do they use a litter box like a cat? Do they live in a cage most of the time like a hamster or gerbil? What do they eat? Actually they look like something my son would trap! Absolutely no offense meant by that...I'm just curious.

No problem...most people know very little about ferrets and I love to educate people about them!
Yes, they do use a litter box (most of the time). They stay in a large cage when I am away from home or asleep, as they can get into all sorts of trouble without supervision. They need to be out of the cage for at least 2 hours each day for exersize and burn off their high levels of energy. They are very playful and friendly but also very curious and get into, onto, under, over and through everything. They also walk well on a leash with a harness. They are pack rats and love to run off with things and hide them in favorite places (like Moxy with his rubber duckies). They are not rodents, like many believe. They actually hunt rodents in the wild. They are related to mink, otters, weasels, badgers, skunks, etc. They were originally domesticated to be used for hunting rabbits (still are in Europe) and keeping mice and rat populations under control on ships and farms, etc. Once they were able to be fixed and decented, they became house pets. I have had 6 all together over the past 15 years. They are extremely suseptable to cancer and almost all die from it after about 6 to 8 years of age. My first 4 all died of cancer. Never easy to deal with but I love them to pieces and am willing to lovingly go thru it with each one. They do have a slight musky odor but, like any animal, if they are kept clean and their cage and bedding are kept clean, it really isn't noticable. They eat dry food similar to cat food. There, ferrets in a nutshell!

Ooooh, those are so cute. You just gotta love those little faces. How do your's feel about being kissed? I'm a smoocher on those soft little faces. My dogs are used to it - they kinda roll their eyes, "Here she comes again" look on their faces.

The ferrets don't mind kisses (I also can't resist kissing their cute little faces!) and they usually give me kisses back by licking my face, nose, ears or even sometimes right on the lips (which I don't encourage ). If I ask for a kiss, I get usually get one. They are pretty smart critters. They are not into cuddling tho. I can hold them for a moment or two but then they want to get down and find something to get into... Only when they are sick or old do they like to snuggle wth me. They do love to play tag or hide and seek with me tho! Very fun!

Ferrets sound like really fun creatures! And they sure are cute! If my kids had known about them when they were growing up, I suspect we would have had a ton of them all over this place! As it is, we had rabbits, ducks, geese, baby racoons, birds of all sizes and shapes, and myriads of cats and dogs. Our pet cemetary is very expansive, although most of our rehab animals were able to go off on their own eventually, and their relatives are still in the area, I am sure!
