How to Keep Dog Behind the Seats While on the Road

Postby dbdjeb » Sun Aug 31, 2014 10:22 pm

Casey, my greyhound, and I took our new Winnebago View out for its maiden voyage. All went well until we drove over some construction speed bumps. Casey panicked, jumped down between the seats and ended up about 2 inches from the gas pedal. As much as I love being close to her, this was not a good situation. I'm looking for some kind of barrier to put between the driver and passenger seats to keep her behind them. I have a baby gate, but it's to wide when it's closed and not wide enough to stretch the width of the vehicle. Short of crating her, I'd appreciate any other suggestions.

Thanks.

Doggie seat belts?

Either that or crate. I have heard stories of accidents in which the dogs were loose in vehicle, they either got out thru broken windows and get hit on the road or escape into woods in unfamiliar places and the owner was unconscious! Or, well meaning rescuers opened the door, and out goes the dog.

I have also heard of stories where cops had to shoot the dog in order to rescue the driver/passengers because the dog was being overly protective.

On the other hand, such as your situation where the dog became such a distraction, you could have hit someone. (remember Stephen King???)

Just a thought...keep our pets safe!

The downside to crates are that they take up room in a rig. The up side of crates are that you know where the dogs are at all times and the dogs are confined and safe. (as safe as can be :? in any vehicle) I don't crate my dog/s when they do "ride alongs" with me in the car and I didn't crate my golden, Herschel, in the rig once he was trained. But especially with the smaller dogs I just feel better knowing that they won't go flying off the seat or the bed if I have to put on the brakes too fast. I know that I can open a door and not worry about someone getting out unless I already have a leash on them, etc. There are scary sounds and occasional things moving around that shouldn't  but the dogs think of their crates as their safe place and ride out the bumps in the road with less stress. But then again, I travel with multiple dogs. I might think differently if there was only one to worry about and train.

I bought a devise that hooks to the dogs harness on one end and into the seat belt on the other, you can see it at the link below. It is adjustable so they can move around in the seat but can't jump down.

I can't give any advice on safe traveling for larger dogs. I hope you find a workable solution.
I use a dog carseat for my pug. I actually thinks he likes the feeling of the 3 pt.
harness securing him in. He will not ride anywhere else. Plus it sits high enough for him to see out.
Got mine at Petco, I believe.

I had a doggie/child gate that I used to keep against the back of the seats and while both dogs I had at the time could have easily jumped or climbed over it, they never did - as they didn't in a house either.

For various reasons I don't crate an animal on the road, and after seeing the devastating results of most of the seat belts supposedly made for dogs - will not use those either. Personal preference, which has been reinforced by the videos of the places who did the testing. However, if I had a dog that got in my way while driving, I'd have to reconsider what I do.

I also have my dog in a car seat. I have seen the videos supporting both stances. I truly think it is a personal preference and we each need to make our own decisions. I don't think there is only one answer.

Like.

Lenora, I'll look for those videos when I have a chance later.
