When I was trucking with my sis-in-law we hauled a load of raw sheep hides from NM to LA. It was hot and the trailer really stunk after unloading. We washed it down and then opened a few cans of coffee and spread it around the trailer. Don't remember how long we left it in there but it got rid of the stink.

I am loving all these suggestions about how to de-stink my refrigerator! I plan to try each and every plan, one at a time! Than you so much for your help! Right now, I am going to try the vinegar after I buy a gallon in town tomorrow. then, on to the coffee plan! (expensive now, but worth a try!)

I've also heard crumpled newspaper left in frig will clear odors.

I had to de-stink a freezer one time and I think I put a pan of charcoal in it for a while. Not the kind with the starter fluid in it. That was about 40 years ago so don't remember much about it but I didn't have to throw the freezer away. I had an outside utility room and a dog had chewed the electric cord. She must have unplugged it before she chewed the cord because it didn't kill her.

Charcoal is a great deoderizer, especially if you crush to expand the surface area. Charcoal is also used in water purifiers.

Charcoal sounds like a great thing to try, as well----if I can find some plain stuff and not the stuff with that lighter stuff in it. It is heartening to know that others have destunk freezers and refrigerators and that they have still been usable! Thank you all, and I will let you know how everything turns out----probably not until I get back here next May, however.

I noticed a smell like something had died in my truck...Yuck!! I tore it apart thinking something perishable got pushed up under the seat..I set the open coffee in it yesterday and the bad smell is gone...still very curious about what it was!
I had the same smell in my office at one time..suspected something died in the wall. That time I put a big pan of charcoal and it worked too but it takes time with charcoal.

Now I am super curious as to "which kind of charcoal" should be used???? The kind like you use in fish tanks? The kind you burn in a grill and cook with? Isn't there something called ?? denatured charcoal??? Is that the stuff that you use for smells????

Activated carbon is the best type of charcoal to use for odor elimination. It has the highest surface area.

I don't know anything about fish tank charcoal. The kind I used was the kind you BBQ with, just not the kind that has the starter fluid in it. I looked on the internet for what to do and there are several things they recommend. Wash with vinegar and water, bleach and water, baking soda and water, put coffee and newspapers. One site said to put coffee and newspapers and leave the freezer running.

Yep was looking and reading online about the charcoal. ??? I don't know if I'd want to use bleach tho? Would be to afraid that the smell of bleach would linger way to long.
