We made it over the Top of the World and are now in Haines watching bears and waiting for the ferry to take us on to Skagway tomorrow.

Great post, Tina. Ouch for the couple who went over - so glad they are okay! I'm hoping the weather holds for me to take that route in September. Time will tell. Glad to know the bears are cooperating in Haines. Have you seen the surf scoters?

I remember that hwy !!! We took it going up and were on the outside , with the ground a long ways down when we had 3 huge trucks hauling road equipment coming at us. Big gravel under our tires, if you get to close to the side, you could go right on over. All this crossed my mind as we kept on going. Yes, I sure remember that hwy.

I'm so glad the couple who went over are ok, you can surely travel a long ways down if trees don't catch you, in some places. It is a beautiful drive and I am so glad I have done it once. That area and the Yukon, are absolutely gorgeous areas in my memory, the flowers everywhere.

This is the post I have been waiting for, Tina, wondered if you all went on or turned around and went back to Tok, this post answered that question.

Glad you all saw the sights and stayed safe,

CArol :)

Thank you for the gorgeous pics!!!

I am so glad that the older couple in the A weren't hurt. I feel so badly for them, they must have been so terrified.

What a trip and what memories.

The road wasn't as bad as my imagination had told me it could be. There wasn't so much traffic on it that you couldn't plan ahead when something was coming towards you and there were more pull overs that I had expected. Every little extra foot of width mattered in spots. Yes, there were narrow parts and as CArol noted we were traveling east and not on the "outside" lip most of the time...therefore if we had gotten over too far we were most likely going to land on our side up against the hill. All that noted, I would recommend dry weather. Dust may not be fun but it beats slippery soup or "snot" as the fellow from Eagle explained to Sprinter back in Chicken. You drive slowly and you pass slowly and you are very careful about how much scenery you can afford to be distracted by when you are actually moving. You take the warnings seriously but driving carefully and keeping aware of the road conditions...it is not that difficult or scary. There were large 5th wheels and Class A's successfully navigating the road not just the little Class B's and Truck Campers.

Some things are just private...not everything needs to be aired and shared.....just saying 8-) Nan admits to hearing the loud boom but Herschel and I were sleeping so we don't really know.... And you are presuming granny pants :D If you have reviewed the People of Walmart site you know that thongs come in all sizes. :?

You weren't as far ahead of us as I thought. We were parked by the road headed to Chicken and saw that Class A go by and later what I now assume was their toad. I didn't see much damage on the passenger side of the A - only a little on the front corner. Glad they people weren't injured.

Great photos....I'm not getting that many while 'on the road'.

Top of the World was well worth the drive - of course, I wasn't the one doing the driving!

You've covered a lot of ground since Homer! I missed a few days.

I made the same trip back in 1981, but in a car. Did you get to Diamond Tooth Gertie's in Dawson City? Lots of fun.
