I wanted to title this 2 Oldies Get Goodies but feared it might be open to miss interpretation.
Wendy (readytogo) and I set off late last week to get our Golden Age passes. The quest took us to Wheeler Wildlife Refuge.

The Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge is a 37,000 acre NWF located along the Tennessee River near Decatur/Huntsville, Alabama. It was established to provide a habitat for wintering and migrating birds in the eastern United States.
Of the 37,000 acres of the refuge, about 4,085 acres are located within Redstone Arsenal (incorporated by arsenal for national security reasons). Approximately 1,500 acres of the Redstone Arsenal land is administered by the Marshall Space Flight Center.
Wheeler NWR has supported up to 60,000 geese and 100,000 ducks, although recently these levels have declined to approximately 30,000 geese and 60,000 ducks. Since 1990, winter goose populations have dropped significantly due to many different factors; below 15,000 from 1990–1995 and about 2,500-5,500 in the last few years. Snow geese are now the most prominent component of the winter goose population, peaking near 1,500-3,200 in recent years. Sand hill cranes are common in winter but the real prizes lately have been the 4 Whooping cranes that winter here.
In addition to migratory birds, the refuge hosts 115 species of fish, 74 species of reptiles and amphibians, 47 species of mammals, and 288 different species of songbirds. Some common mammals include squirrels, raccoons, opossums, rabbits, quail, and deer. Approximately ten endangered species which live on the refuge.

Once inside, our human greeter turned out to be a full time RVer who is working for the summer in return for free parking with full hook up. He sold us our senior passes and took photo to record the occasion.

Our trip was in what is considered to be off season but we did enjoy a brief tour. Apparently many of the birds and animals who were not as lucky as the hawk help support local taxidermy business. Without tags, the following show what one might encounter along one of the many trails.

Of course there was food involved. On our way back we stopped in Madison at what was once the 2 cell jail house.

Now we just need to plan a trip to take advantage of our new discount passes.

Gosh, should have reviewed the pictures first! Oh well, I just don't take good pictures. The man working the desk and his wife were full time rvers volunteering at the refuge. Sarah didnt mention when we walked in he immediately asked if we were here for our senior passes! But he said someone had just called (nice quick thinking cover-up)! Just got back from my casino adventure and am debating going up to lake tonight or tomorrow. Kind of tired, my room was next to some type of air conditioning or machinery and didnt get hardly any sleep. I know, the advantages of rv traveling and all. And usually something like that wouldn't bother me, guess it was the pitch or something. So still deciding about my weekend. next adventure for me and Sarah is a trip to CW about 40 mins south of me, for Sarah needs more stuff!!!!! Everyone have a fun rest of day. Wendy

I'm counting down until I can get mine. I'm trying to decide whether to get the annual pass or not. If I wait and get it when up in MI next month, hopefully it will still be good when we are back in MI next June. And I can go to other National Parks in the meantime. Too bad the annual pass isn't good at COE parks.

Looks like y'all had a blast. And why do I think this CW trip is going to involve lots of money? :D

The Golden Age Pass, you can get after age 62, is good for a lifetime. Also good at COE CGs. Natll. Forest and entering all Parks like Grand Canyon etc. , no fee on entering them, show ID with card. It's a valuable item to have when traveling.
Cuts your traveling expenses, more money for gas :D

This is one of my favorite org. To send gifts to end of each yr. They sure have saved me plenty and I owe them, so parks all can stay open for all of us.

So get your pass soon and enjoy !!!

CArol :)

You have reached the "golden age" and it does have a few advantages!!
Nice that the two of you live close enough that you could get your passes together and turn it into a fun day. Thanks for sharing your good time with us.

We were stationed there twice when I was a kid. We lived in both Huntsville and Decatur. I wish we had been able to go see this when we were kids. Loved the pics and glad you got your passes. Still a few more years for me. Mom says she is going to go get hers again. That will save for us too.

Yippee! Now we all have our golden passes..we were talking about this at Deer Run gtg. I got mine at the Smokie's VC..but I didn't get my picture taken
I'm knee deep in house improvements (for selling) and selling Destiny (mh)...One guy is driving me crazy..he wants it but also wants to steal it. He keeps calling back trying to get me to tell him things that are wrong with it. I told him one of the fantastic fans won't turn but motor is humming..that is all that I know of and it has been checked out from stem to stern. The last call was an offer 1000 under my asking then he backed out. I wonder what the next call will be. I hate tire kickers! All that said to say I wish I could come run around with you girls but maybe later...you could also come a little northwest to see me :D

Thanks for the pictures Sarah. I think you should have gone with your original title that would have got everyone's attention! Sounds like you and Windy had a good trip glad you are getting in some miles, wish I were. Congratulations to both of you for getting your passes.
