Me Again - Question on Basement Storage

As I am slowly loading up my motorhome in preparation for my trip through Michigan and my "Great Adventure" heading out west to full-time, I had another question:

What should I NOT store in the basement storage area, considering the heat of summer, especially since I will be traveling through the desert in July and then again in September? (Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, etc.) I know not to put the obvious things like food down there, but what about other stuff?

For example, I have a couple of short and fat, brand-new candles I thought would be nice to take with me so I could put one outside on a picnic table after dark. Are these going to melt if I put them in the basement, even if I wrap them well?

What about some family photos I am taking to my son in California, along with the family bible they got as a wedding gift in 1938? Or am I better off moving some of my extra clothing to the basement and putting this stuff in drawers in my bedroom?

Thanks, and check out my retirement counter!! I am going to have to change it in a few days. Will be finishing packing in June and moving out of my condo, having toe surgery, and hanging around my Ohio son and grandkids for a few days before heading out on my own July 1.

Candles should be fine in the basement, but just for protection I would store the pictures and bible inside. You don't know how weatherproof the outside storage is until you hit a big rainstorm. I've been thru a lot of rain and never had a problem and then I hit the daddy of all rainstorms in Tn and my basement had water in it. Do you have storage under your couch? My jackknife couch has storage under it. My bed lifts up and there's storage under it...have you checked to see if yours does? Some of the C's do and some have the water tank under the bed. There ought to be somewhere you can tuck pictures and a bible away w/o putting clothes outside.

Judy, why not just send the pictures and bible to your son? That way you don't have to worry about the weather or water damage. It will also save you space in the RV. Just a thought. Linda

I hadn't thought about rain splashing up under there. They seem pretty sealed, but I guess I won't know for sure until I drive through some heavy rain.

I have a lot of storage underneath, which is why I was considering using it. However, I also do have more than enough storage for clothing, at least I think I do--still some empty storage spaces above the sofa and where my recliner will do.

I will certainly make sure I keep everything in rubbermaid bins!

Congrats on your retirement!!

About storing candles in the heat,, i've had real bad luck doing so.. just saying.... i'd put them up top. If I were you i'd stick some of my extra clothes in the rubbermaid bins down there in the heat.. doesnt hurt clothing... just my thoughts.

have a great trip... again,,, wish I was at this point of my life. You gals are so blessed!

happy and safe travels,,,,
