getting a checkup, not the way I planned it

ok, so I mentioned in the morning thread how I was having some symptoms, when I went to auto zone
I got a little more alarmed and came directly home. Called daughter and told her my mouth wasn't
working right and I couldnt shut my left eye. Of course she sent her people (the firedept) and guess
what, I'm booked into a room with room service, cable tv and internet and being waited on hand and
foot. :D No stroke and not even sure yet if it was TIA but neurologist says bells palsy. Brain scan
(ct) came out good, but spending the night to do the rest of the rule out tests of tia. Won't go into
the rest of the boring medical detail but lets just say I finally got my check up and thanking my
company benefits for my health savings account.

Guess you are where you need to be......belles palsy isn't as scary are a stroke but it isn't too much fun either. ....and you are right on about the peace of minds knowing that you have health insurance. It still ends up costing you some money you don't have but hopefully not everything. Fill us in with details as they come around. Nice to have a daughter that has "connections" and takes good care of her mother.... :)

dinner was chicken salad sandwich without the salad, (mayo) guess I forgot to include that in my order.
Fruit bowl and cottage cheese, vanilla pudding for desert and raspberry tea for beverage. Course I poured
that raspberry tea over my ice water and turned it into a night long raspberry sipper :D
Sometime between now and whenever they will come and get me for an mri, guess the
ct scan didn't cost enough  ok, shuttin down for now but maybe log back on later.
You can't imagine how funny it feels to eat something off a spoon when your mouth
doesn't close over the spoon, half of the spoon is clean and half isn't. Just too funny.

Oh my! I'm glad they ruled out a stroke! My mom had an episode a couple of weeks ago and I was so glad to hear no stroke. And a friend of my parents is going through Belle's palsy. She said she was told the symptoms only last a few weeks. I hope you recover quickly!

I'm glad your daughter got you where you need to be! Take it easy & get some rest while you're in there...in between them coming in your room every hour, waking you up, to see if you're sleeping.

Wow Ave, how scary! Good to get in right away to get tested just in case it was a stroke. My mom had belles palsy and it went away in a month or two. Not sure what causes that...

...found this article on it...

Hope you get to go home soon!

Geeze Ava!!! Scared me half to death when I saw your post title!!!

Kelly has Bells Palsey. She had it when she was in 3rd grade when she was 8yrs old and all symptoms went away. She had another episode in February 2007. She still has lack of full movement on the right side of her face. She said it's called residuals, her face 'healed' tight so her right eye doesn't open as wide as her left and her facial expressions are a little lopsided. She did a lot of research online into the problem and possible things to take. One was Omega 3 so fish oil capsules would be good. Also Methylcobalamine, it's a vitamin b and she thinks you need 80mlg. You can get them at the Vitamin Shoppe. She said that there is also a shot you can ask for, she thinks it Prednisone. One guy she IM'd back and forth with got the shot right away and he was cleared up within something like 24hrs.

I also had it when I was younger somewhere in my 20's. Doctor I went to scared the crap out of me!!!! I think I had it for about 6 weeks. I can still see a slight difference in the two sides of my face.

With Kelly and I both we were told that there is no known cause or cure for Bells Palsey. I wish Kelly had stayed on the fish oil capsules but she got disgusted and said she couldn't see where it was doing her any good so she quit. ME?? I could see a difference but she wouldn't believe me.

Please be sure and keep us posted!! Take care.

they did a predinisone shot in the ER and tomorrow morning they are starting me on methiprednizone.
I'm not surprised they come in every hour to check, or recheck or just to let you know they are going
to  honestly, there is a reason for it as they are keeping an eye on the patient. I'm on the stroke
ward but probably their lively-ist patient here. They do have subtle ways to do simple tests without
you realizing it. The day nurse told me that earlier when she gave me the dribble test but was actually
testing for my swallowing reflex during conversation. That was one of the tests I had to pass to get
bathroom privileges. So glad of that cause I sure didn't want to have to be asking for a bed pan every
half hour. Every hospital must have a nurse ratchett and that would be the one to decide not to
bother with a bedpan and just do the catheter. So yes, bathroom priveleges were really appreciated.
well, I did find out the mri people are gone for the night and they are suppose to get me for the morning.
Hmmmm, wonder if that will be before breakfast. Ok, thats it for now gonna log off and lock my puter back
up in a few. The built in cabinet next to the bed has two locking drawers and I have the key. Makes me
feel safer with my purse etc when I have to leave the room for various reasons.

Glad you are getting checked out and it was not a stroke. Our oldest daughter has had Bells Palsy a couple times. It is not pleasant for her either. It's not fun when you cannot control your face. Take care of yourself and get well soon.
