DVD Lending Library

Postby JudyJB » Fri May 04, 2012 3:01 pm

I have been thinking about why I was bored last weekend when I had no TV or internet access. WHile I had books and my Kindle, I really could not read for more than an hour at a stretch without getting tired of it. The weather was conducive to walking only part of the time, and my back was hurting.

So, I do not own many DVDs, but I went through my condo and found 5 which I tossed in the bin where I am collecting things that need to go into the motorhome. This will not last me long, however. I did go onto Amazon and ordered two more that were relatively inexpensive. (I will be saving all of these for when I really and truely head out west to CA to visit my other son.)

I thought I also would ask my kids to donate any old DVDs of movies they think I might enjoy. (I do not like violence or heavy sex things, so that might also be limiting. I am more the documentary and Ratatouille type person.) I might even ask friends, and then if they want them back, send them back via mail. Cheaper to borrow and mail back than to just buy new, right?

What do you think of this? And could we set up some sort of lending library here? It might end up being a donation thing because it would be hard to get things back.

Or do you have any other solutions for cheap DVDs when you are not staying long in a place to use a library??

Sharing sone thoughts.
On my last campout with Marda we also had no cell or TV signal and one day with pretty much continous rain I did have my iPad to play games, but found the spare cord I bought to recharge the battery didn't work so playtime was limited. And that also meant saving my battery on my iPhone as they use the same cord.
I only brought 4 DVDs ( I know all the dialog to the first two Harry Potter movies now), but Marda was kind enough to let me watch some she had brought. She had picked up many from garage sales really cheap.
Also some campgrounds have libraries where you take a book/leave a book in exchange. Perhaps they are expanding that to DVDs as well?

You might want to look into getting a membership with Netflix - I know several rver's who use them - you can get them delivered direct to your computer now, or, when staying someplace any length of time, use the old fashioned by mail service. Also, Redbox rentals are cheap and are in so many places. I always think I'll watch movies - have some I bought a couple years ago that I haven't opened.

You will also find some campgrounds that have books to trade, also have movies to trade with them.

I need to get a new laptop, and it will have more RAM and a faster processor, but my one experience with downloading a video was pretty bad. It took over 4 hours to download, not good if you have limited service.

The redbox rentals are a good idea.

If you want to have their mail service, yes. I have a friend that uses that all the time - whenever she stays anywhere long enough to get mail.

Judy- it all depends on your connection - and on the road, sometimes it's good, sometimes not. But I'd only want to do it when using good wifi somewhere - not eating up my time on my internet that I pay for. That's just me. I've even used the Redbox twice now - it was so convenient.

I went online to Amazon and found a couple of really cheap DVDs of older broadway shows and one movie I missedseveral years back, so I ordered them as my emergency stash. Found they also sell used DVDs online, but I think I will look for those red boxes and check for sales and garage sales for DVDs.

I guess this also showed me how important it is, for me at least, to have at electric if I am going to be someplace for longer than one or two nights if there is the possibility of being shut in because of bad weather.

I always make sure that I have a few audiobooks from the library downloaded to my MP3 player so even if we don't have electricity we can listen to a book. Of course we have to sit side by side and share the earbuds (either one for each of us or I use a splitter). It's great for bedtime and the battery lasts a long time, much longer than the laptop battery.
