First Camping Trip!!

Postby JudyJB » Mon Apr 30, 2012 11:58 am

I am spending three nights in Mohican State Park in Ohio getting used to using all of the systems in my new RV. It was only about an hour from the storage lot, and drive was OK on twisty roads. Managed to hook up electric, water, and sewer and flush systems. only problem was a missing plug when I turned water heater on, but I heard the noise and was running around looking for my keys so I wouldn't get locked out and a flashlight when three men knocked on my door. (Need to keep flashlight right by the door) Anyway they helped me put the plug back in.

Tomorrow, I go to the dealer in the morning to have some minor things fixed and then put it back in storage and drive 3 hours back to Michigan. Whew!!

No internet or phone service at park, so am in McDonalds. Had to unhook everything, but need practice anyway. Put Chlorox in tanks and using this time to slosh things around. Will finish sanitizing when I get back.

I put one of those command strip hooks right by the door to hang my flashlight. It manages to stay there even when traveling. And the keys go on the top of the closet. I may even put a hook up for the keys someday but for now the top of the closet (also known as the entertainment center since that's where the TV antenna hookup is) works for now. I can reach the top without climbing all the way into the trailer if need be.

And you will find most campers are very helpful. Glad the 3 men were able to help you.

I remember my first time, too, and shared it here on the forum. I had so many notes and checklists!
It does become less stressful and more routine with each trip.
Good job!! :)

your first camping trip sound like it went pretty good except for the plug but all in all i hope you had a good time! I have to agree most camping are always willing to help one way or the other.. Many times i have had them off to help me back in if they see i am having trouble or help me guide the trailer in. Usually by the end of summer its a piece if cake... LOL i surprised myself and did it all alone acouple of weeks ago..

well have a good trip home.!!

At the dealer now waiting for some trim and other minor things to be fixed. Drive here was partly on windy and hilly country roads, which I did NOT like. I feel much more comfortable driving on freeways because they have wider shoulders and I can choose a lane. I think I could handle a lot of miles on freeways!

I will say I was a bit bored. It was really cold the first day, and only thing todo was to hike or walk. My back prevents me from hiking very far, but hopefully that will improve in the future. I also do not yet have a bike rack so no bike along. Having my bike would have helped. I did take fairly long walks each day.

When they are done with these warranty things, it will go back to the storage lot, and I will drive home. Got a long list of stuff I still need and a bike rack is right at the top of my list, along with some thigns like shelf organizers.

So glad you had a good first trip and only minor things have to be fixed. Have fun getting all the things you need to really make your RV your home.

Congratulations on your first successful campout! You will soon relax as hooking up becomes routine and driving more comfortable. You may even grow to love the scenic back roads.

Spent three hours in the dealer and got everything fixed. Will no doubt have to make another trip before I head out west in late June.

Big event today was that my GPS took me through downtown Mansfield, OH, during rush hour, on the way to the storage lot. (My son lives near there, but I am still not confident in driving around that area, so was relying on the GPS.) I can describe Mansfield only as an older city with a crowded downtown area, with lots of turns and not very wide one-way streets. So there I was in a 32' vehicle, not knowing how to get out of the mess and only able to follow the dumb voice. Oh, and did I mention it took me under a 12' railway bridge?? You know, those old narrow ones? Luckily, I had verified before the trip that my RV was 11'6" but it was certainly not comfortable.

And of course, my map of Ohio was in my regular car.

Anyway, made it and backed into the storage spot. Unloaded and now home. Whew.
