What's your favorite wine(s)?

Postby Travelinana » Mon Apr 16, 2012 11:58 am

I live in a dry county. I hit Thunder Road Sat to replenish my 'spirits'...It just dawned on me after I had a couple of glasses of a new wine, why don't we share our favorites, if not literally unless we're at a gtg, but here on the forum.
I will start (sorry Mitch, I thought of it first) by introducing you to' Barefoot Shiraz'. I think it's a CA wine, the bottle is gone now and forgot to look. There are so many from so many different countries and with the weirdest names. I suspect most of you are like me..the cost range is 8-12 dollars. Barefoot was only 8 and really good. I especially like Shiraz as it is slightly dry, best room temp and has a very mild sweet taste.
I can't wait to hear from all of you..or at least those who imbibe. I will open a new one tonight, maybe two, for Linda and my celebration of her arrival. She is getting closer and I'm about to get my shower, go to the top of the hill so I can escort her into town and on to the Campground.
After all the horrendous weather, today is beautiful. We had a thunderstorm last night and I think a tree was struck on the edge of my property but haven't looked yet.

Howdy, Nan! You and Linda will have a grand time sipping and chatting! I am so thankful she made it out there in those horrendous storms. Say HI from me, too, please!

My wine tastes are nil, as I really don't appreciate any of it. However, in a pinch, I can actually sip on some flavored MD 20/20---I like the orangey/pink colored flavor, whatever that is---I can't remember. It's more potent than those dry, bitter wines, and almost tastes like some kind of sweet fruit juice!

I'm not exactly a wine connoisseur actually I prefer beer...domestic beers...ice cold...right out of the can! Boy does that make me sound like a redneck or what! But I do like Marco Nigri and Blue Nun wine. Also there is a winery in Hill City SD that makes a Red Ass Rhubarb that I like too. If you're going to be in the Black Hills it's a fun place to visit. http://www.prairieberry.com/index.php

I'm not much of a drinker, but like a white wine if that is only choice. Otherwise I like Vanilla Rum. Mix it with my diet Coke and it tastes like just a Vanilla Diet Coke. I have one of these once or twice a year.

I have two favorites:

1) V. Sattui in Napa makes a very rich, mellow Madeira. It is a sweet dessert wine, but unlike a lot of dessert wines, because it is "solera-made" by storing it in wooden casks for many years. Expensive, but you only drink small amount at once and a bottle lasts a long time opened.

2) Napa Mumm makes a sparking wine/champagne called "Cuvee M." It costs about $22 per bottle in the winery, but most of the time you can get it for $15 at the local supermarket.

Other than those, I like just about any Chardoney or Gerwurstaminer. I think $12-$15 is about the most I would want to spend on a good wine, other than the Madeira, so that is about my limit. I am not supposed to drink hardly any alcohol at all because I once had pancreatitis, so I don't get a chance to enjoy wine very often. Can't drink red wine at all because it gives me a migraine headache.

A nice dry Merlot or Shiraz (I like The Brown Box (used to be called Bota Box) or the Almaden). I have been trying to find a really dry Chardonnay because between wine, coffee, and tea (pretty much the only 3 things I drink), they're staining my teeth.

No Cabernet Sauvignon (ACK) and I haven't found a Pinot Grigio I like yet.

However, the research continues.

In high school, we'd combine champagne and Ripple.
It was known as Champipple.

My "go to" wine, when not being treated to an expensive bottle, is J Lohr Seven Oaks cabernet sauvignon. It's from the Estrella Hills area of Paso Robles, CA. carold

Chocolate Wine - how can you go wrong chocolate and wine together - there are a couple of different brands. Smooth going down! - Great over ice.

I just recently started drinking Malbec but I don't have a particular brand.

I like a good shiraz and chardonnay as well. And I happen to like yellow tail on both.

My favs are the ones I make myself...peach, plum, cherry, grape, all kinds of berries, and rice. I can't stand a dry wine so mine are sweet and fruity.

I actually prefer beer to wine. I like "craft" beers (not Budweiser) and my fav right now is Abita Amber. I do drink wine on occasion. I'm a wuss, have a sweet tooth and don't like "dry" wines so my preference is for something a little sweeter like Reislings and Gewirtztrimer. I've been enjoying Luccio Moscato (@$12/bottle) and a sparkling wine, Moscato d'Asti, by Castello del Poggio (@$12/bottle) most recently. Love the suggestion of adding vanilla rum to coke. I'll be trying that. And I'm going to look for that "chocolate" wine since that sounds devine!

I just had and liked the Moscato d'Asti- much lower price tho - when I was in TX, went shopping with my g/f and they had it at Sam's Club. That was good.

I don't drink much of anything - including wines - but my absolute favorite is from a MO winery (St James Winery) and is their Pink Catawba.

Not a fan of red wine (have only had one I really didn't dislike and don't remember what it was).
