Picked it up yesterday!! Yea!

Postby JudyJB » Sun Apr 01, 2012 7:55 pm

Picked up my new motorhome yesterday--took over 3 hours for all the paperwork and the walkthrough. Glad my son was there to listen also, becuase I can only remember about half of what the guy said! I drove it about 80 miles to his house, with only one teeny, tiny "event." :o Had one of my need to get to the restroom really, really fast episodes, so called my son who was driving ahead of me and know his way around that area. He led me off the expressway and into a McDonalds, right past the No Trucks sign! Luckily, I was able to find a double parking spot, and ran into the restroom. Whew. Even better was that with his help directing me to back up, I was able to get out of the parking lot without any problems.

I would have pulled over somewhere, but I had no toilet paper with me and we had not put any water in the system because we were afraid of a hard frost in the next few weeks. I am SO looking forward to having my own bed and toilet with me!!

We set it up overnight in his driveway and let the two older kids play in the overhead bunk. I could not believe how many TV channels we got just with the antenna, but I almost forgot to put it down before we moved it the next day to the storage lot. I unpacked all the towels, sheets, bedding, and kitchen stuff I have been collecting in piles from all my sorting and getting my condo ready to sell. Also, my tools, rug for the door, and other stuff.

So it is just going to sit until the last week in April. I am going to try to take a week off from work if things are slow, or at least a four-day weekend. I can drive down there and go off somewhere to try it out. I only need some foil, plastic bags, paper plates, a stool, and some food and I'll be all set. I also need things like a very small waste basket and drawer dividers, which I ought to have enough of already if I can just get rid of some of my junk here in my condo.

They unfastened the big dinette, but left it in place. We decided my son did not have enough storage in his basement, so it will stay where it is until late April when he'll move things around to make enough space. I will need to work on repairing the holes in the floor and wall so they don't show so much, but I can't bring my recliner down until I move. I can do some short trips without it, however.

Very exciting but tiring weekend! Will post some pictures later when it is less of a mess inside.

I'm so happy you got to pick it up & play some in it. I hang a bungee cord (because it has a hook) on my tv antenna crank to remind me that it's up. Anything would work like that or put a reminder on your steering wheel would work also.

Yay!! You did good. You need to put some water in your tank so it will be there when you need it. I tie a piece of 2' long lavender ribbon on my TV antenna retracter thing as a reminder to put the antenna down. Have only used it 2 times as I usually like cable. Enjoy your new home!!

Very neat! So happy for you. I don't use a ribbon, but simply hang my rv keys from the antenna knob. I can't drive the rv without the keys - so if I go to grab them from there, I remember to put down the antenna. If I don't put the antenna up - those keys don't go there. Anyway, that's what works for me.

Terrific! And how nice was that to have your son with you! We've left our our antenna up a few times when we were parked in private campgrounds and lucky for us either someone yelled or there was a reminder sign driving out  so far haven't pulled out with sewer or electric still plugged in, but have left our pads under the jacks. When we first started rving, we had two lists, parking and leaving  We all have our stories  carold

Congratulations!! I know these next few weeks will be long ones for you but anticipation is all a part of it. I do the note on the drivers seat if I have windows open or things I need to remember to do before I leave. When I left here on my last trip, my DH told me a couple of days after I got home that I took out all the neighbors garbage cans as I backed out and he spent about 15 minutes picking it all up  I heard a noise and thought it was a sound I had heard before backing up, humm maybe I've left a trail of destruction :o

CONGRATS on getting your new rig! I can't wait to see some pics of it! Have fun equiping it, and, as someone said, it's sort of like playing house when you first set things up! When I get home, I live in my railer all summer even though it is parked right in my yard and plugged into the house power. It's still like sort-of camping, and I love living in there where all the clutter of the house is not in my sight!

I like the bungee cord and the keys trick for the TV antenna! First, however, I need to take a stool down so I can actually reach the TV antenna! :D

It is like getting your first apartment or house, isn't it? Lots of fun. I am continuing to make a list of the minimal stuff I need to go camping the first time. I measured the drawers for dividers, which I have a ton of at home now and just need to take with me.

My thoughts are that as much as possible should be put in totes and duffle bags so it won't rattle around. I have a ton of those vacuum bags for storing linens, luckily. Whew. A lot to remember.
