Alaska winter

I was reading the Peninsula newspaper and thought this sentence was interesting.

"As of Friday evening, with snowflakes falling outside, Peterson said Anchorage was 3.2 inches away from breaking the 1954-1955 record of 132.6 inches".

When I lived up there we could get snow well into June. They also went on to say that breakup will be a mess with flooding and that always takes it toll on the road systems etc. Wonder what kind of weather Canada is/has gotten this winter and how that will affect the highway? May make for some rough traveling in some spots.

Thanks for the heads up Lenora. But I am committed. I'm goin hell or high water! LOL Even decided to bypass an RVW convention with friends in Gillette, WY and let my toad here (as Bethers suggested) to put those diesel dollars to better use. I'll take my chances.

Love,
Sharon

Pat,

I will be leaving Kerrville on June 30th. Was originally planning on catching a rally in Gillette, WY and then heading to glacier Natnl Park on my way to AK. However, with diesel prices the way they are and will be, I've decided to streamline my travels this summer. I'm still taking my 2 months off, but have made AK my priority.

Sure will miss you this summer. You know you are my favorite gtg spot when I get up that way! You have me so spoiled! ;)

Love ya,
Sharon

I'll be the first one heading up - leaving into Canada the beginning of May - so I'll be able to let everyone know about the roads - at least the ones I travel.

We'll be leaving Arizona April 28 (if not sooner) with a stop in SD for LeRoy to become a resident. Looks like we will be just a few days behind Beth.

I'm making great progress - got this much put together for picture posting...

http://georgeandmichelle.com/alaska.html

And here's a map (similar to our Member Map) where each traveler can (if they want) pick their own "map icon" and post their route progress...it's still a work in progress. I have chosen a green campfire icon to represent me.

Heard on the news this morning how because of the seriously cold weather and snow, the price of goods has skyrocketed in Alaska. They said toilet paper was going for over $39 for a 12-pack in Nome, Alaska. They also said Pepsi 2 liter bottles were "on sale" this week for over $4 a bottle. And the one that may affect our intrepid travelers - gas was $5.96 a gallon this week in Alaska!

Yes, I had heard that Nome, had it really bad this winter. Had not heard the prices but the fact they could not get anything in to them. Where they usually had 4 deliveries of fuel and other necessities, they were only able to make "1" trip. They did have a really bad winter up there, and I expect prices on fuel and other necessities are going to be higher.

There is no doubt, the way prices are climbing down here, that Alaska with more distance to get supplies up there , will be higher then we might want to pay, but guess we'll have too. I , of course, will hope their prices don't have to be so high as to effect my heart. Had some of that problem in Fl. this past winter. With that experience behind me, I'm more prepared for up there now though. :P

I'm leaving here first of May, going to meeting place up in Glacier by way of Colorado. I hope to have a short visit with my family out there then will go up through Wy., which I am looking forward too and meet by the end of the month. Getting so excited here, that it is sooooo hard for me to do all these things I must before leaving. Doubt I was this bad as a kid

CArol :)
