iPad

I know discussions have taken place on this subject but I have some specific questions so please bear with me.

Those of you out there who have iPads, are you happy with them? Do you use it instead of your laptop? Do you miss having your laptop? Can you do everything with it that you do on your laptop? Do you also have an iPhone? Can you open different extensions with your iPad as your laptop, i.e., ppt, word, jpeg, mov and more? Any recommendations will be appreciated as it's either a new laptop or an iPad.
Thanks,
Carolyn

OOPS, Beth, this should have been posted under gadgets & gizmos I guess, would you please move it for me? Thanks.

It's fine here. I don't have one - looked at them - by the time I added an external keyboard, external hard drive, external cd drive - didn't seem worth it to me - as I would have needed all those things. Maybe some of those things have changed since I looked, but it made me decide I still would need a laptop.

Love, love, love my iPad! Does it completely replace a lap top? No. It's a tablet, not a computer.
Things that need flash player won't open as well as pdf files.
I use mine allot for email, web surfing, watching movies/TV shows, this forum, Facebook, paying my bills and ordering 'stuff'', and I Google. Love the fact that I can make the screen larger by just using my fingers in a pinching motion. When people post small pics I can make them the size of my entire screen.
There are tons of apps you can download but most free ones aren't the full version. ITunes knows how to market them! ;)
I also have an iPhone and with the new iCloud, any Apps, photos etc I download to one devive automatically transfers to the other.
Any more questions, just ask.
PS do all my posting on here using it. Works quicker than my PC.

I just 15 minutes ago walked in the door with one. Haven't even opened the box yet.
I wanted it for paying bills online while traveling...Verizon's pre-pay is not bad for occasional use - $30 for 2Gb for 30 days. $50 for 5Gb for 30 days.

Just lost my post which was quite long....not gonna try to put down all that info again. I have the IPad & the separate keyboard. Love them. Between using the apps (GPS, Netflix, Newspapers, my local paper too so I can keep up with what's going on when I'm away, Skype, email, paying bills,,,,I could go on & on...) It's a wonderful investment as far as I'm concerned. I do not have an IPhone, but don't feel I need one nor the expense...I do travel with a notebook computer which serves different purposes. Between the 2, I don't need anything else. And like Mitch said you buy the service that you need and cancel when you want....no contracts & endless costs. I have the Verizon one (they come in 2 versions .... AT&T or Verizon)....As my phone service is also Verizon that worked the best for me. Go to a store or check with a friend to show you what can be done with an IPad....then you can make your decision....also, if you have Grandkids that have one like I do....they'll amaze you with the things you can do with one....

PS- for myself, I bought the 1 yr AppleCare. If I have ANY questions or problems I just call 1-800- myapple and get excellent service. I did have problems with my first two ipads and they were replaced within 4 days!
If I lived close to an Apple store I may have foregone (?) that option.

I'm still learning my iPad2 and my iPhone4 (not Siri) but like them both. Need to take the Genius Apple classes unless my 2 year old grandbabies teach me. They love playing on their moms' iPad and their parents' iPhones too. There are apps just for toddlers that are very entertaining for the babies especially when traveling long distances. They learn from these devices also.
I still need and want my MacBook Pro laptop though. Think the iPad is in addition to not a replacement for your laptop/desktop (if you still have one).

My DH has one and loves it, I on the other hand do not. It jumps all around at the slightest touch and you can't back up (maybe his doesn't work quite right) or maybe I don't have the touch down, plus you can't get adobe flash. I totally love my iPhone though and probably won't take my laptop on the next trip as the phone has everything I seem to need. I think the iPad would be better because of the size but...I just get too frustrated at it.

You can use the screen lock so it doesn't flip when you turn it and yes, you do need to keep your fingers on the margins of the screen area unless you are doing a task. not sure what you mean about not backing up.

Just an add - I know I'd like them - but it would not be able to replace my laptop - and that was one of your questions and why I didn't get that or one of the others out there.

Love my iPad but no it doesn't replace my laptop. It does save
much eye strain that was developing as result of too much reading
on iPhone.

Mitch - Which iPad did you buy?

..

I got the 16Gb Black Verizon at WallyWorld for $529. Be careful at Wallyworld - two stores told me an iPad could handle either internet provider, which is not true. They are specific to either Verizon or AT&T.

I LOVE it already. It's beautiful. Except (shut up, Vickie), the fingerprints on the screen could make me crazy...(again, SHUT UP!)

The books are going to be SOOOO much easier to read than on my little iPod Touch.

..

And there was a different no-contract plan available after I bought the thing - $20/1Gb/30 days. Not much bandwidth, but not much cost, either. Perfect for the occasional traveler.
