Well, the end of Kiwi's time is near. Those who are my facebook friends know that she had a terrible seizure the other night that left her unconscious for more than 10 minutes. At first, I thought she had died. Well, last night she had a seizure about 2 a.m and another two about at about 8 a.m.

I resolved to put her down today. Then I realized it is Sunday. I hate to say it, but I balked because it would cost $75 more today than tomorrow. Turns out ... she is still herself this morning, sort of. I'm watching her right now and she is acting fairly normally (if a tiny bit dazed). And ... She-Who-Will-Not-Eat just wolfed down an egg with bacon mixed in (who wouldn't?). So it isn't a crisis at this very moment.

She's such a little old lady.

Janice, I am so sorry to hear this, makes me cry. What a cutie and I know has been a super little companion for you for many yrs.

These times for my friends makes me really sad as I have a little old friend here too, who was a life saver for me, yrs ago, and even now.

Thinking of you, glad she ate today and hope her day is a good one for both of you.

thats one heartbreaking decission that we with pets have to make.. .... i hope she has a few more days or months with you... How old is Kiwi? does she take meds for seisures?

It's a tough and heart wrenching decision but also the final biggest act of love that we can do for our furbabies. {{{{HUGS}}}} for both of you.

Christine, when I adopted Kiwi from the Humane Society, they told me she had been surrendered and the owner said she was 11 years old. Now, if I were going to surrender an older dog, I'd lie about its age to encourage adoption. Sooo .... based on that 11-year-old baseline, she should be close to 16 years. I'd bet she is older.

I took her to the vet after the seizure that left her unconscious for more than 10 minutes. As I have a terrible time getting She-Who-Will-Not-Eat to actually, you know, eat, we agreed that anti-seizure meds would make her less likely to eat. And she is skeleton-thin as it is. So the short answer is no. I have decided to let nature take its course. And now that the seizures are starting to come in "storms," it's time.

Which is easy to say in the abstract, right after a seizure. But she's been bouncing around this morning, she easily negotiated the deck steps up and actually used the doggie door to come in (which has been beyond her for a while). AND she ate like a champ (no small deal).

Our little Heidi got scrambled eggs and chopped hot dogs for her last year and her appetite dramatically improved. Just enjoy her while you can. You'll know when it's time to let her go.

The only experience I have had with a pet having seizures was Annie, the cat we have that had seizures as a kitten. The vet gave me a couple of syringes with Diazepam(Valium) to give her rectally when she had one. That is so hard to watch them go through it. Annie was on Phenobarbital twice a day for six months. I gradually weened her off it and she never had another one. I wouldn't say she is the brightest bulb in the bunch but still a good cat.

So sorry, Janice. I know this time isn't easy for you or Kiwi. Hugs to both of you.

That is always a heartwrenching decision to make. Like you said, it is easier while they are having seizures (my last ferret had seizures from his cancer), but then they seem to bounce back and then you second guess your decision...until the next seizure hits. You just need to trust your gut and do what you feel is right. Make your last day(s) as special as possible.

Its good to hear she has perked up since her last spell... i really hope like i said i hope she has a few more months to be with you.. is so hard to see them go thru illnesses... when the quaility of life its over its tough..... looks like she still has some "spunk' in her tho....

Aw Janice, I'm so sorry about Kiwi. I know what you are going through though, as I had a collie who got seizures periodically. She would have one and then come out of them just fine. She finally however got cancer and I had to put her down at the age of 8 years. I still miss her to this day as she was raaised from a pup and actually, I have had 4 more collies since that time, none of them were pups, all were older ones that I have adopted. Eventually a pup is on the horizon again. I know it's a hard decision to make, but it's hard on them as well as us to watch them suffer and eventually you know it's time.
