Hello Ladies,

What are your plans for Thanksgiving day and/or weekend? Any special RV trip planned?

My neice and I will be cooking Thanksgiving dinner for the two of us, as well as her husband. It will be a threesome. Two sisters will be out of town and one sister will be working (she is a nurse) and the other sister lives out of state. Actually, I am looking forward to a low key Thanksgiving dinner this year.

It seems every day for me is Thanksgiving, I am feeling such peace here in the desert.

I remember by parents would come down here, well before the term "SnowBird" came into vogue, and camp at the base of Crystal Hill, which isn't allowed anymore. They would meet up with friends and have a desert-style Thanksgiving meal together. My dad would dig a deep fire-pit to cook the turkey in...they said it was the best turkey's they ever ate. That's all so far gone now, both parents have passed away and finally this year I have made my way here to see where they stayed and experience the desert they loved so much. The mountains up behind Chrystal Hill are something out of a fairytale, layer after layer of spires and peaks, jutting straight up, I can see why he chose that. I can see those mountains from my sight just six miles north.

I thought I should show hommage to them and cook a "buried" turkey myself, but it would take man muscles or a backhoe to even scratch the surface here, plus I am sure my turkey would end up filled with dirt. So, probably have a BLT, give a prayer of thanks, and call it a day.

KD, funny you should mention that "buried" turkey. Some were talking about that on chat in the singles forum just two nights ago! Never heard of it and now twice in the last couple of days, its always funny how that happens. Mentioned it to son, but think we'll have one fried and one traditional baked turkey. Would love to go to the mountains in Tenn for Thanksgiving like we did the first year after i retired. i was in retail so never had a long weekend for the holiday until then. But sons have other families to do things with also and one will be recovering from surgery this year, so no out of town. I enjoy us all getting together for Thanksgiving, but my hints to do it at sometone elses house have not taken hold! Wendy

My son will be coming down from Michigan to spend the time with me... Last year was very special Sarah, Wendy and I spent the day together... and we had only things to heat up in the microwave... maybe next year we will do it again... my daughter will want us to come over but not sure what my son will want to do... I have a turkey roast just right for two or three or four... sounds like the huge feasts of yesteryear are no longer to be...

Forgot to mention last year with Kathleen and Sarah. Sarah had a last minute change to her family plans and was able to come, my family had already changed our dinner to friday and kathleen was passing thru. These spur of the moment unexpected things are always the most fun. It was a great Thanksgiving!

No plans here yet. My sister has to work the Friday so she won't come and I'm not going up there. My DH can care less about holidays. I haven't talked to my married son so don't know what their plans are. If they want to come I will cook. My friend and her husband cook a huge meal if they are home and always want us to come. My anti-social family won't go so sometimes I cook them something and go to my friend's house. Depending on what's going on in their family. Sometimes there are things going on that they don't want to be involved in so they plan a trip and get out of Dodge.

Getting out of Dodge would have been nice. I would have like to take the week off and gone RVing somewhere, but my neice would have been by herself (her and hubby are separated and are working on getting back together) and I didn't want her to be by herself (we invited hubby to come spend the day with us). My sister, her mother lives out of town and is working on Thanksgiving day (nurse at VA hospital). She really wanted to celebrate the day with some family. First I offered to take her out for Thanksgiving Dinner, but she wanted to do the cooking thing. So, I offered my home and cooking services (most of you know I am not big on cooking ) for Thanksgiving Day dinner. It will be fun spending some time with her. We will make it an R&R day, with cooking, eating and watching movies, maybe even a bonfire.

It'll just be hubby & me this year. I always brine my turkey, which I will again this year. Even though it's just the two of us, we'll still have the full spread. We love the leftovers and all the different meals we can have afterwards, from turkey divan to turkey soup. If anyone is in our area, you are always welcome at our table.

As usual, going to the sand dunes at Mammoth Wash, just out of Niland. My GF cooks the turkey in the BBQ and I'm in charge of rolls, pie and cranberry sauce. I used to be in charge of the potatoes, too, but that got given to someone else, thank goodness! I used to bring the breadmaker and make rolls from scratch, but that was for my hubby....he said it was the best part of the meal. Now it's Pillsbury Crescents. I still make the pumpkin pie from scratch, tho. Gotta keep some part of the tradition alive. Leaving on the 20th or so, be back the Monday after. I'm anxious to see if the new antenna Birdie got me to buy will work out there. Usually have to get up high on a dune to get out. Not that I miss it all that much, but would be nice to be able to get online and see what ya'll are up to.

Irmi, I used to brine the turkey, too, sure does make for moist white meat.

It's lame, but I made reservations again this year at the Golf Club. They have a great buffet and my sister and I will ride around the golf course and watch her son play after lunch. We did this last year when I was trying to come up with something to do after our parents passed away and none of us wanted to face Thanksgiving at home. Anyway, we're camping in Ocala the weekend after Thanksgiving. I plan on relaxing in the campground's hot tub while they go to the Gator game Saturday.

This year I am cooking for my daughter and son and their families. (Well, son and his sort-of- fiancee...but I consider her family). In the past I always had the holiday dinners and loved it, but times changed and sisters and brothers have their own families and traditions so for the last few years I have gone to my daughter's house. However, I am looking forward to this year so I can bring out my Thanksgiving dishes which were bought on an impulse and never used. They are packed away with the Christmas dishes that come out once a year... I try to extend invitations to anyone who would like to join us since I know a few friends who annually wait for family invitations that never come. Turkey goes a long way...the more the merrier.

Thanksgiving will be with family...this year at my oldest dd's near Tampa. Younger dd & kids will come too. SIL has to work...army. With no house, I don't have to hostess nor cook this year... For Christmas we'll all gather at the younger dd's in GA. After that, I'll be off on a new adventure.

I think the Thanksgiving I've enjoyed most in recent years is the year we camped at Amicalola (sp?) Falls State Park in GA. They had a wonderful buffet in the lodge and all sorts of Pilgrim era activities for the kids. And a hiking trail to walk off the big meal.

What an interesting read this is! Carolyn, I love what you are doing for your niece.

There will be a potluck here in the park with some of the ladies cooking turkey. Potlucks aren't my thing on a normal day so I don't find it a pleasant meal when one person thinks she has to tell a room full of adults how to line up, when they can get dessert, only take a little, etc. for 10 minutes while the food gets cold. We've already had a 10 minute talk on how the turkeys will be paid for. Sort of takes the holiday feeling out of the whole thing. I think we'll go to the buffet at the casino in Parker or if we are lucky, L will have to go back to Algodones for his dental crown that Wednesday and we'll go to the casino in Yuma.
