Adventures on the Forgotten Coast - Florida

Postby longdog2 » Thu Aug 11, 2011 11:28 pm

I've been having a great time visiting here in Panama City. We made a trip down the Forgotten Coast through Apalachicola and Carrabelle. Since my son is still active duty military, we were able to take advantage of a unique RVing program called Tents for Troops. We were able to stay two nights for no cost at the Carrabelle RV Resort--very nice. The Resort is on one side of the road and the ocean is on the other so we had a pool and the beach. We went to Ochlocknea State Park for two days as well and it was really nice. Then there was the day trip to Wakulla Springs--a not to be missed treat. I wrote it all up and included picture on my blog for any who might be interested. http://travelinglongdogs.blogspot.com

That is definitely a great area. When I was at FSU in Tallahassee, we used to head over there on the weekends. There was a time you could just camp right on the beaches. We still use that route when we're meandering out of Florida. Nice that you were able to take advantage of that program. carold

Nice trip! Looks like the kids are having a blast...the big kids, too!

You should get hold of Alice - that is her territory, you know. How come I never knew that was called the Forgotten Coast? Have traveled it!

I think it was dubbed the Forgotten Coast quite a few years ago but it is not nearly so forgotten now although still not crowded. There are a lot of state parks and I love the fact that they have shade. Wish I could send some of this rain back to Texas as there is more than enough to share. I am still not used to the humidity (and bugs) but surviving. Love the water when it isn't coming out of the sky.

I thought that I put a message to Alice in one of my forum posts but I probably need to check on it. I would love to get together for coffee with her in the next couple of weeks. She sounds like fun. Right now things are hectic with my son's retirement ceremony on Monday but towards the end of next week, I will have time again. Also hope to touch base with some of the Louisiana members on my way home but right now I don't know exactly when that will be.

Thanks for the pics..we really love them as you well know. That looked like a great place and those little ones were wired from all to see and do, I'm sure. They are cuties...looks you might have a little aspiring model. Your son is a physical speciman, the dedication to fitness has paid off.

Yes, let us know when you head back.

I was so glad I got to go to my son's retirement ceremony from the Air Force. It was awesome.

Thank you for the travel blog. I will have to check out that area. I've been to Panama City but never explored the entire area.

Just catching up on your blog. I love that area of FL but not until late fall or early winter - well that is true of most of FL for me.
Good looking son you have there. Know you must be excited over his upcoming retirement.

I can think of better times to visit Florida too but Steve gets the kids for 6 weeks in the summer so that is when we could travel and camp with them. It is way hotter in Texas where I live but we do not have this humidity. Actually so dry there right now that we probably don't have any. It's not a problem here when you are swimming and you just have to work around the rest. Hard to believe that I ended up with two such athletic sons and both of their wives are athletic too. Steve's wife is a pro triathlete. Their dad was pretty athletic in his younger years but I have never been. Sigh.
