Yesterday's Field Trip

Postby Forestgal » Sun Jul 31, 2011 11:22 am

Yesterday a friend and I went to the International Quilt Show, being held in Long Beach. I'm not a quilter, but I was told that there were other crafty things there. Well, 5 hours later I have to say that it was time well spent. :) Here are some pictures of the quilts that caught my eye. I'm absolutely amazed at the creativity of people AND the patience they have to make such magnificent products.

It was great fun! I even came away with a "jelly roll" of batik material and a pattern to make a quilt. It's the "Butterfly Blooms" quilt, and the jelly roll is in the bottom left corner of the picture. And I found some awesome instructions for making rag rugs -- something I've always wanted to try my hand at.

There's another huge show in January, and I just may have to go to that one, too! :)

Laura those are just lovely!! Especially love the first one with the fishies and the one with the happy sun along with bees, butterflies and ladybug.
Good luck with your project. Quilting is something I've never had a desire to do but there's so much talent in these projects. Have fun.

Beautiful quilts, thanks for sharing the pictures. My mother liked to quilt but hers were just a hodge-podge of scraps with no pattern. I was already gone from home and too much into my own life to try to influence her hobby. I am lucky enough to have a quilt made by my sister's mother-in-law. Her quilts were works of art.

Carolyn and I and some of the Ramblin Roses went to a kind of farm co-op near Waco where they had hand made things for sale. The quilts were beautiful but they wanted $2,000 and up for them.

I went to that quilt show last year and Laura is absolutely right - it is quite spectacular! Amazing the talent that's out there. I only do little ones, like wall hangings, etc. Don't have a separate room to set up for large quilting. Many of those folks have whole rooms full of equipment.

Beautiful quilts! Cloth is their medium for their works of art.

wow is a good word to use! as well as awesome. When we think of quilts I visualize what my mother in law would make she loved to quilt and did so good but it would be like she was in kindergarten compared to these...Art it is

The old car struck a cord with me, too.
Beautiful and allot of intense work. That's why they cost lots of moola.

Those are really very beautiful. Take a bit of work and imagination to get them down perfect. Would love to make one of those. Need to add that to my bucket list.

Quilting was a requirement not too long ago. I remember doing a lot of it. I have one (for twin bed) that I carry here in the rig that my Mom did about 20 years ago. I chose not to carry the full-bed one that she made or the one that she and I made. There are just plain jane, keep warm kind of quilts.

Incredible. I agree about the quilt with the car. Pure artistry (is that a word?).
