Best Camping Story of the Trip

Postby Joan » Mon Jul 25, 2011 1:42 pm

When planning my sojourn to Necedah to pick up 'The Far Fars', one of my main goals was to see The Grand Tetons on the way back and spend two nights there. I called the Colter Bay RV park and was able to make a reservation for Thursday night. The plan was to check for a cancelation on Friday or move over to the dry camp next door that is first come first serve.

Here is campsite #4:

We arrived after dark so we did not unhitch. We unpacked enough for my Mom and me to sleep in the camper and my sister slept in the car. (One thing to keep in mind when you do this is that you can feel when someone moves in either the camper or the car. In the middle of the night you might wake up from a sound sleep and freak out the a bear is shaking the camper. Not sure what put it in mind, maybe all the bear warning signs.)

The next morning I walked over to the dry camp to talk to the very nice man at the booth. He recommended that I come back around 9:30 to 10 to get a camping spot. I then stopped at the RV park office to see if there was a cancellation and was told no.

Around 9:30 we packed up the camper and car and headed out. I stopped at the office again to drop off my camping slip. The woman in the office said: "That is the cutest little camper I have ever seen!" My response: "And yet there is no room at the inn for her." Two minutes later, I was walking out of the office with another slip with camping spot #57 on it. This spot (as are all spots) is a pull-thru but it is sold as a back in because it is on an incline. However, there was more than enough room for The Far Fars to be level.

As a result, we were able to set up camp:

And go sight seeing:

We ran the furnace both nights. We also managed to cook the second night. The other nights were after long driving days so we stopped for food.

This was the highlight of the trip! I will definitely be returning to spend more time.

Beautiful pictures. I'm curious about the small tent thing on the side of the camper. Is that a seating area?

Super pictures, Joan! I can hardly wait to hear how you're liking your Far-Far. What are you using the large blue tent for -- hanging out in during the evening? And the skinny white tent on the passenger side? How are you doing without a toilet/shower? And where are you off to now?

Thanks for sharing with us, Joan. We look forward to hearing more about your adventures.

Love the look of the camper.....and it just doesn't take up any space at all. I know that you will continue to turn heads where ever you go!

Now how cute is that neat little camper! I love it, and it must tow as if it's not there, something I would really appreciate! I would love to see some pics of your setup with the tents, and the inside, too. thanks for what you did manage to post while on the road. How lucky you were to get such a great campsite!

Sorry I did not have a chance to respond yesterday, first day back at work.

VickieP and Bethers: So far so good. I love the camper. Easy to tow and set up. So far the only negative I have is more of an issue with the tow vehicle. I wanted to store the camper in my garage. My driveway is 19 feet long and rises 3 to 4 feet. Unfortunately, the forester does not have a low enough reverse gear to push the camper and itself up this incline in reverse without smoking the clutch. This may also be due to a learning curve of the end user. :D To be fair to the 2009 forester, it does have hill assist which came in handy when the road construction crew stopped us on a hill. :x

Ladyhawk: The manufacturer of the camper sells a sidetent that is designed to attach to the camper. It is approximately 4.5 x 4 feet and provides enough room to change in and put a portapotty for those late nights where you don't want to run to the bathroom. The tent has hooks for clothes as well.

Forestgal: The large blue tent is an Eureka Northern Breeze screen house. On this trip, my sister was sleeping in it. It was also nice to have because of the mosquitoes. We did not do this but other teardroppers put the screen house over the kitchen area in the back to protect from inclement weather when cooking.

I have two types of 'canopies' for the camper. The Northern Breeze will be used in situations where I will be camping for longer periods in one spot and the weather is iffy or mosquitoes abound. It is very light and as you can see, has walls that can be used to protect from wind, rain and sun.

I also have an REI Alcove shelter that is about half the size and can be set up fairly quickly. This will be used for one night camping situations or if the weather is nice and no pesky insects. You can get sidewalls for this as well.

We will be going on a weekend camping trip soon and it will be a better test of the camper in 'camping' situations as opposed to the mad dash from Wisconsin to Oregon.

What a great first trip. Loved your campsite. I do think you will have to get use to people wanting to see your Far Far and all the tours you will be giving. they certainly are an attention getter. :D Thanks for sharing your first adventure and hope to see many more. Linda
