Well ... the second of my two laptops bit the dust yesterday. I curbed my desire for an Apple Air Mac and found an HP laptop (Pavilion g4-1104dx) at Best Buy that comes with 4GB RAM and 360GB hard drive, an HDMI port & 14-inch screen.

Price? $349. Not bad.

Janice...let me know how you like it....I bought a HP dm4 1265dx a couple of weeks ago because my old laptop had seen better days...Bought it to take with me on my trip but as posted previously had to turn around & come home due to a family emergency. Anyway, because of family problems didn't realize that the return policy was 14 days. When I finally got to use it I found I really, really didn't like it & was going to return it...However, Best Buy isn't customer friendly...and though when I got back into town it was 2 days past the return time, they wouldn't even speak to me...Am not happy with Best Buy nor the HP...will really think twice before I make any further purchases with them...and the HP? Well, I'm an XP person and Windows 7 is (IMHO) crap.........Of course, maybe it's just me...Hasn't been a good month, months, Oh Well, you get the idea....family member still not doing well which is my priority right now...wish I could work miracles...but will just be supportive & caring...So Janice, how do you like your computer ?? and Windows 7....BTW, my HP cost me $650 & as far as I'm concerned not worth $300............. :(

I like Windows 7 even tho I liked XP, too. Much friendlier than Vista. I HATED Vista.

I'm sorry your computer didn't work out well ... hope mine is fine. So far, so good. Seems to be doing everything it should. I loved XP too ... and Vista WAS a pill, I agree. This version of Windows 7 seems to be fine. It gave me a lot of games ... which made me happy. But I'm easy.

The longest hardest part of getting a new PC is downloading all the stuff I want on it, like iTunes, Firefox & others. THEN subscribing to all the public radio podcasts (again) was a long drawn out process. But I'm just about there. I hope I don't have to re-load all my music as well.

But I AM happy to have a computer that isn't on its last legs.

I think the thing that has upset me the most with this new laptop/notebook or whatever it's called...is that (especially on this site)...I have red x's where the pics should be & when I try to fix it through tools, etc. I can't get them gone & the pictures to show....In XP I don't have that problem but in this Windows 7 I sure do...got any suggestions???? :?

Those red x's are usually one of two things - a setting on the computer, or a slow connection and not taking the time to let the pictures appear. If it's a setting, it could have happened with Vista or any of them - just means the setting needs to be found and changed. Unfortunately, I can't tell you what the setting is - but you might be able to find it by asking Microsoft. And those could have happened on any computer you purchases, that's not something inherent with HP.

So far I like 7 - And I just recently upgraded to Explorer 9 and that took more getting used to than any I've changed to - but I like it so far. I love having less visible tool bars and more of the websites I'm looking at - weirdest was having somethings (like favorites move to the right instead of where I was used to them, but getting used to that also.

All that said, I HATE my Toshiba - which I bought because the price was right and so many people I know loved theirs. In August I will have this piece of #$%& for 2 years. And I bought it with enough memory etc that I'll probably be living with it much longer. I've worked around lots of the things I dislike about it - but having usb ports things slip out of - would cost me money to replace - and sux.

Janice, ouch about having 2 go. Hope you like the one you purchased and it works well for you.

When I got this computer at Best Buy I took my old laptop in and "for a price" they will transfer (almost) everything over. There are some things that won't transfer, but for the life of me I'm not remembering what. :?

Beth, I agree on Explorer 9. Took a bit to get use to but liking it more.

Thanks Beth (about the red x's)...I know it's a computer program correction that needs to be made...just don't know what the fix is....called HP Tech Support when I first saw the problem & got some guy in India that I could hardly understand...being as that bothers me A LOT (i.e.,I always think of all the out of work people here in the USA that would love to have the job....)Anyhow, asked to talk to a USA Tech...he said he couldn't do that...so I hung up. Called a day or two later & got some one in the Phillipines...again asked to talk to an American Tech...nope, nada, no. Hung up...Being as HP offices are right here in my area I thought I was being a 'good' American, buying a USA product...well, guess I mis-thunk.... :?
Anyway, moving on....the other thing I hate about this computer is the flat keys...How does anyone type on these things without losing their 'position'....Really don't like the computer & will not buy another one from HP (which is now on the same list as Dell)....Matter of fact with so many jobs going over seas leaving our people out of work...think anything I buy in the future will be checked for a MADE IN THE USA tag or I ain't spending my American dollar on it.... :x
