More Dangers of Home Owner Assn's

Postby Bethers » Mon Jul 11, 2011 3:43 pm

I hope to never live in a neighborhood with a home owner association. They simply have too much power and can make rediculous rules you have no say over. Now I read they can foreclose on your property over an overdo assn bill - ONE overdo assn bill. Yes, I understand some of the rules - but, to me, most are out-of-hand, and obviously since many states are re-looking what they are doing, it's not just me.

Amen, sister.
I don't think I could EVER live someplace with an HOA.
That article is kinda scary!

Yep, Mitch.

And Vickie, you were evil just now. Evil, Evil :)

Lots of other things I will do in my driveway if I wanna. However, I don't want neighbors dropping their pants in my driveway ... hahaha - but don't want or need a homeowners assn to take care of it.

I find that sad and frightening.
I, for one, am happy with our CCRs and how our HOA runs. I live in a very desirable neighborhood because of them.

When I owned my condo, I had to sneak my ferrets in since they were not allowed. Also had to have neutral colored curtains in the windows. It didn't feel like my own home at all. Luckily, I got out when the market was good and made some money on it.
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

I would never live in an HOA. I don't need a handful of snobs telling me how to decorate my home or dictating what I can have or do.

I lived in a HOA community in FL. What a PITA. I was renting at that time and went for the "interview" before being accepted and allowed to live in the community. It was a single family home community. I had a full size passenger van at the time and let them know at the interview. After I moved in I received a letter from the association stating the rules pertaining to c ommercial vehicles. The van was registered as a passenger car, not commercial. It took 3 weeks to straighten it out. This problem resulted from a change in the members of the HOA. Another incident: there was no parking allowed on the street. The homeowner had to make an area for parking on the property. My homeowner didn't want to, so I would improvise. Since the homes were small, garages were used as storage. Anyway, I moved stuff in the garage around to allow half the van to fit, thus allowing someone else to park in the driveway (allowing this vehicle to be fully in the driveway, as per HOA rules). A day or two later I received a letter from the HOA about the incident, along with a fine of $25. The HOA didn't like the look of the garage door being open. Yes, members of the HOA would drive around the development and take notes which resulted in letters and fines. I couldn't get out of there fast enough.

There was another HOA in the next development to this where fights would break out at their meetings. I will never again live in a community with a HOA. It seems the larger the development, the worse the HOA. At my parents condo in Ft. Lauderdale, things were unbelievable. Letters and fines were issued for anything and everything. This is no way to live.

...and that's why I live in the country. I know some people love the HOA's keeping their deveopment nice, and that's nice. I choose not to have neighbors, except in the campground.

I have an HOA in my community. Sometimes the people that sit on the board are like know-it-alls and they have been known to walk around taking notes and issuing warnings. Glad I'm one of the quiet homeowners and park my car in my garage. The motorhome can only be parked on the street for 72 hours though.

The important thought here is that you have a choice. Live where there is a HOA or not. I've been on two HOA boards and I have experienced both viewpoints - being the homeowner living under the HOA rules which I may not always like or being a board member having to enforce the HOA rules which I may not always agree with but cannot get changed. Residents know about the HOA before they move in. There is a neighborhood very close to mine and it is a dump. Unkempt homes/lawns, cars or trucks parked on the lawns, crazy colors painted on the homes, weeds, garbage cans left lying by the curb. They have the freedom to do pretty much what they want and in the process devalue the neighborhood. HOA's are not all bad.

But isn't it a shame that society has to tell people to keep their stuff cleaned up? Is there no pride in making your lawn, your home, look presentable? Doesn't have to be the Taj Mahal, but come on folks...have a little pride

I own 2 rental properties that both have HOA's. I understand the concept, but would never ever live like that.
