Kayaking At 70

Postby WickedLady » Sun Jul 10, 2011 10:26 pm

Went kayaking yesterday with a group of people, the oldest being about 20 years younger than I. :? This was my first try at a kayak trip. We cruised (well, they cruised; I struggled) for about an hour or so and then hauled in for lunch and waited for the tide to turn. I seemed to have a slow kayak that had a mind of it's own. No matter how fast or hard I paddled I kept bringing up the rear  Another hour or so to get back to the launch point and my arms are about to fall off  It was an interesting day but I think I will stick to white water rafting :D

At the launch site getting ready to go.

It is not easy taking a self-portrait at arm's length.

It was a beautiful day and the water was calm.....

Marda, congrats on your first trip in your new kayak. You looked very professional in all that gear :D Don't worry, those arms will eventually feel better and you probably built up those muscles to boot. How did your back do? Glad you had fun and being in the rear ain't all that bad  Nice that you were able to take pics. carold

Not my kayak. They were supplied by "Alpine Experience". The fella behind me in the first picture was in charge of them and was kind enough to help me get out of the darn thing.

Did they show you the correct way to paddle? Use your whole upper body rather than just your shoulders and arms. That way you don't get fatigued so fast. Good back support is helpful too.

Kayaking is easy unless you are going against the wind

Yay! But it is one reason I like going out on my own. I go as far as I want, as slowly as I want. To do something like that, I'd have to go out several times and get my arms, etc back in shape. Before I go to AK again, I want to be in "kayak" shape - cuz I want to kayak on a trip into Prince William Sound in Valdez. Hopefully. That will have to be where they provide the kayaks and in a group- for where it is :)

You did good.

Took my first kayak trip at 70.
Still have a hotair balloon ride and a Rogue River raft trip on my bucketlist.
Maybe I will try sky diving when I turn 80 :D
