Don't ask me where it hurts ...

I've got lots going on ... my forum FB friends know that I got a new road bike yesterday. I rode it six miles home from the bicycle shop, and let me tell you ... I was more than a little sore -- there -- this morning.  So I got back on the bike this morning and did another five miles. It hurt a lot for about the first half-mile ... but after I got off the bike I'm still sore -- there.

I'm wearing a dress today instead of pants. 'Nuf said.

On another front, the organizer of an already-full Wasatch Mountain Club river trip agreed to fit me in. It's over the 4th, and is a few days of fun runs ... not a multi-day trip. Car camping. Good stuff. I may bring a cataraft and practice rowing 'cuz the runs are only Class II (though I expect the river will be pumping!). I might also bring an individual paddle craft. Yes, I have a flotilla.

Oh, and my San Juan Island BF has been downgraded (in my mind) to someone that I don't expect to ever see again. Next.

Good for you, Janice! :)

Have you thought about replacing your bike seat with something maybe a little more woman-friendly? ;)

And your rafting trip -- boy, if I were closer I'd be trying to weasel my way in to the trip also. I'm really jealous! Hope you can manage a few pictures along the way.

I still occasionally ride a bike, and I can wholeheartedly recommend an oversized gel seat. It makes a ton of difference. Now only my legs and back hurt when I ride!

You want one that it 8" or so wide at the back and that has some springs as well. These are not too expensive and you can get one at your local bike shop.

Oh, also make sure the bike shop installs it so it does not tilt forward. If it did that, you would end up putting too much weight on your hands.

Good luck,

I'm in pain just thinking about riding a bike for a short distance. I'm in awe of you! Now what's this about a San Juan bf? Now I know why we rarely heard from you while you were there. Somehow I had missed that tidbit. Hope it was lots of fun. And now, next! :)

I agree about the bike seat. I had the biggest squishiest seat I could find (memory foam seat at KMart) and my underside was much happier!

Why are you dumping the man?

Janice,,, just disregard what I wrote about your 'of late' bf. I went back and read some earlier posts and that answered my silly and prying question. Hey... it is/was what it is/was. Glad you got a morale boost from the whole thing. I just have one thing to say,, although it sorta comes a bit after the fact..... YOU GO GIRL! (a gal's gotta do what a gal's gotta do!) I know I would!

Keep in riding. I am eyeing a bicycle myself.. and after reading what you said about the weight just FALLING off,, well that sure enough enticed me, already! ! ! !

im off to the bike shop to SHOP!

later then!

I have (ahem!) adjusted to the bike seat. "It" mostly doesn't hurt now.  I may upgrade the seat, but I'm gonna work it out for right now. I'm astonished how fast my stamina is building. Today I picked long gradual climbs ... and I'm pulling them pretty well. I want to work up to the point where I can ride Emigration Canyon ... a 7-8 mile gradual climb. I'm doing just 5-6 miles a day right now.

The difference to me between hiking and biking is that in hiking, for every footfall going in, you have an equal number coming back out. On a bike, you do the work up front and there's a reward at the end -- DOWNHILL!!

I'm really feeling sad ... I told BF that I was going to take a curtsy and bow out. Damn, that hurts. I bawled most of last night. But I called a GF and she said she admired my courage. She has spent the last 12 years turning herself inside out, trying to make this guy love her -- then one day a few months ago he just didn't call her again. After 12 #@!$% YEARS!

She said I'm smart -- I just got out. It's not so much smart ... I just don't want to hurt on the installment plan.

So that's all the news from my corner of Utah.

Good for you, Janice, on both fronts (or should I say half-front & half-bottom?).

Your body will adjust to the seat. Kind of like working up callouses on your fingers when you play the guitar. And your attitude has LOTS to do with that too, you know. :)

As for the gentleman ... I'm always of the opinion that it's better to be proactive than reactive. And by putting an end to what looked like the inevitable only reinforces to yourself (and others) just how strong you really are ... really.

So good on you for taking care of yourself both physically and emotionally. May not feel good on many levels <weg> but the payoff is far better in the long run.

Hang in there!

I have a female version of a PeeWee Herman bike and it has a seat that looks like it belongs on a Harley. The kids makes fun of it...but at least my whoha doesn't hurt. ;)

My kids always called my bike seat a "tractor seat", but it was better than those narrow ones. I still haven't found a seat that fits me right. (did the gel and didn't make any difference for me). I need something that holds my buns w/o having to go between my legs. Do you think there is a specific reason for the pointy part?

Anyway, Janice, good job on your biking!
Sorry, you got your heart broken.

Congrats on your bike purchase! They make biking undies with padding. They have them at your local outdoor/sportmans shop.

I dugged my bike out from the garage during my temp. move and had it serviced. No more excuses! Time to ride and get back in shape.

Have fun!

You ladies are the BEST -- this is why I love this forum. SO much support and understanding.

I'll survive walking away from someone I first thought might be the one. But in retrospect, there were red flags, and I WAS noticing and keeping an eye on them. I suppose I have a few of my own (  ) but nothing (I think) that is cause for a WHOA!!

LOVE the discussion about the bike seats.

I met up yesterday with the Wisconsin friend (male) with whom I've been corresponding by email daily for more than a year. HE drove hundreds of miles out of his way to meet me -- and here I am a chocolate mess. But as bad luck would have it (for him), his truck needs to be serviced. So he'll be here a day or two longer (good for me). Maybe long enough for ME to pull my head out. I had told him about now-ex BF weeks ago and explained the circumstances of the ending yesterday. And that I am sad. He said he thought exBF is nuts to let me go. Nice to hear from someone who has come to know me quite well from a distance.

All of you -- thanks for the friendship, laughter and support.
