So here it is May 26 and it's been snowing for two days. The elevation of this park is 4000 ft, right at the snow level. But, it's just a Spring snow and isn't sticking here in the park for more than 1/2 hour, then another burst of snow comes through. But the mountains just at the end of the park are covered with a pretty dusting. It should be 80 degrees here this time of year...it's so ironic, here I sit with a three-day-old sun burn that is peeling while I watch the snow come down...I believe that is a first for me.

Not being a cattle rancher I didn't realize that cows really aren't all that stupid. When this huge wind and sideways snow came in late afternoon yesterday those several hundred head of cattle that occupy the acres and acres of rolling hills cleared off the open hills and hid in low spots and went over the crest of the hills to the protective lea side,, not a cow to be seen as far as you could see in a matter of seconds, really. ...then when it subsided out they came...I am easily fascinated.

Mountain Blue Bird, matches the garbage can color, very rare in Washington but lots of them here


Western Tanager, again, fairly rare in Washington but lots here


Magpies, probably common in several states but always seemed pretty to me, in the bird world they are "bad guys"; nest robbers, etc.

It's hard to imagine you're having snow when it's almost 90 degrees here in MD. The pictures are so nice!

Yeah, I didnt' do such a good job at stating where I am...I kept saying how rare tanangers, and mountain blue birds are in Washington and how there are so many here...but I failed to say where "Here" is. I am on the Oregon and Nevada border...at Lakeview Oregon. since it's only 500 or so miles from Washington it's neat that I am seeing birds here than I rarely saw in Washington. It is so much fun to see the different birds along with the ones I have always enjoyed, they just delight me to no end.

I'm not meeting up with anyone; no plans to meet my two sisters...they visited me in Netarts Bay Oregon while I was there...probably won't see them fo years now...unless they want to fly down to Arizona and hang with me....they might do that. I leave here on June 15 to slowly make my way through Nevada on my way to souther Utah to visit all the national parks there for the summer, then down into Arizona for the winter. On my slow trek through Nevada I will stop and see the Great Basin Mountains, several wildlife preserves, hope I don't run out of gas...gas stations are far and few between in Nevada...but I have extra cans in my truck, it's just hard to lift them...this getting old stuff is nuts...where did all my strength and agility go...and so quickly...oh, well, we old gals will still "geet er done". I figure if I run out of gas and need to pour from the cans I will rig up a strap from the gas can handle to sling around my shoulder to alleviate some of the weight and then stand on my little step stool, that should work just fine. Maybe some big ol handsome cowboy will stop by and do it for me...so to speak.

Great pics. Love them. What's the elevation where you are? That could be why you're still seeing snow, although I'm sure it's late still!

The elevation is 4000 ft but as the first photos shows the snow level was apparently at 4090....LOL

Well, it it's any consolation, it was only 42 here at noon, and add a stiff northeast wind to it. BRRRRR. Fortunatelly it did get into low 50's later on in the afternoon.

Beautiful pictures. Love all the birds. Haven't seen the Tangers either. Pretty birds. I've been enjoying your pictures and tales of you trip. Please keep posting. I feel like I am traveling with you.

I too wonder where the strength and agility has gone. As you say, this getting older stuff is nuts. Somedays at the hpark I think it's getting time to quit doing all this heavy physical work. Fortunately it's pretty well over now. Guess as long as we can keep hitching up those TT's we are in business.

Yep, I will crank the ol TT hitch till I can't crank anymore then I will have an automatic crank installed.

Kdmac, if you are near Elko, NV and want a place to stay, I am a camphost at Thomas Canyon Campground in the Ruby Mountains south of Elko. No hookups, but it is a forest service campground. Beautiful spot and hopefully all the snow in the campground will be gone by the time you come through.
