What would we do without friends?

Sharon stopped by the other day and took my evaporative cooler apart to see if she could get it running. She KNEW she could fix it - I thought since it had been sitting without being used for quite awhile, I would probably have to replace it. Never underestimate that girl! Of course she could fix it! Sharon can fix anything!
She did this even before tackling her own coolers. Now that's what I call a FRIEND!
For those of you who live back East and are asking what the heck is an evaporative cooler: They are fondly called swamp coolers. Looks like a standard window A/C unit from inside, but outside is a huge container that holds water in the bottom, pumps the water up through pipes mounted inside the ceiling of the unit, and the water drips through holes in the pipes onto straw-like pads. When you turn the fan on the fresh air is pulled through the wet pads and brings cool air into the house. Doesn't work in humidity, which is why many of you have never heard of them!
This should save a bundle on my electric bill since I won't have to run my central A/C as often!
Friends are a precious gift.

I agree, friends are very important. In our first two houses, swamp coolers were the only cooling we had.

Amen to that. Unless it's someone like Vickie. Then it's just plain annoying.

It IS nice to have people who aren't afraid to tackle projects like that, Evie.
As an aside to the swamp coolers, I remember when I was little & living in La Mesa (read: HOT in the summer) we didn't have air conditioning. I remember my mom putting a garden hose over the kitchen door and a big box fan just inside the door. She would let the hose somehow run over the open door and the fan would draw in whatever cool air was created in the process. I remember laying on the linoleum floor at times to cool off.
Glad we don't have to depend on that kind of technology anymore.

Does anyone remember being in school before air conditioning was even thought of and it was soooo hot. I'm thankful we now have A/C in our homes, RVs, cars, malls, etc. Yaaaaaay!! And, there's people like Sharon that can fix them if they break.

Three cheers for Sharon! Friends I think are the greatest treasure one can have.
I remember school when there was no A/C horrible!!! I also remember when our homes didn't have it and I was so happy when we got a fan that rotated. I shared a room with my brother and I remember one really hot night crying and my Daddy came in to see what was wrong. I sobbed I'm hot and that fan is always on his side of the room!

I agree about how wonderful friends are - and how extra special Sharon is
As to air conditioning - didn't have it in school or at home for quite a few years. When we finally got air at home, it was ONE window unit for the entire house. In the worst of the summer, we were expected to play outside - and never complained about it. I remember how shocked I was going up to the WI Dells with my g/f and her family - and how COLD her dad kept their car. They all had to wear sweaters in the car, but hadn't told me. I about froze on that car trip. I don't remember not having air at home being a problem - was more of one at school, but I don't think because of the heat as much as because I wanted to be outside.

Oh yes, the hot weather when in school was miserable. And it always seems like the latter part of August is always cool. Sort of a harbinger of the season to come. But the first week of school, it never fails to get hot again.
We never had AC downstate where we lived either. Just the box fan or those window fans. Even when we moved up here, we didn't have AC either as our wndows being casement (crank out), they didn't make AC for those kinds of windows. Here in the house I am in now, I have two window AC's. With hot water baseboard heat, central air is out of the question. But northern Michigan is not necessarily a place where it stays hot for a long period of time. Not to say we don't have heat waves. Last year I think I put the AC on maybe a half donzen times. The year before, I never even put them in.

we are so blessed with the new technology that we have
