looks like a fun little reason to take a hike, now if I just had a gps, one more thing to add to my list of toys i want.

Still need to take my 2 GDs geocaching. They asked the other day. Looks like great fun, Liz.

Liz, enjoyed seeing your first geocaching adventure. I did a couple this weekend with my nephew. Looking forward to camping at Geowoodstock this summer. Maybe I'll see you there.

I went to Geowoodstock last summer in Washington & had a blast! The highlight for me was trading path tags -- a whole sub-culture of geocaching of its own.

If you haven't tried the virtual geocaches you might give it a shot. They're lots of fun & you end up learning some interesting tidbits sometimes. My trip to Yellowstone & the PNW last summer majored on geocaching. One of the gals I traveled with hit 1000 caches found while in Yellowstone. I'm still a real newbie, having found only 325 so far ...

If you have a smartphone you can probably use it as a GPS. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to talk more about all the fun you can have. I LOVE geocaching!

my brother and sister in law do a lot of geo cashing my dd does letterboxing same principle but you don't have to use a gps with letterboxing just a thought Ava..
they both look like fun just haven't convinced DH of it

Laura, thanks for the info. I looked online and found a group in my area called WSGA. I just joined their forum and will see about joining in their campouts etc. Looks like a blast!

Good for you, Lenora! Geocaching is one of the best outdoors activities I've found in a long time. You can do it alone or with a friend -- or even in a group. The possibilities are endless!

When you get your new iPad you'll be able to use it if you want, although it's a bit large to be hauling around. But as I said earlier, if you've got a smartphone there are some super apps (depending on the type of phone you've got) that will do just about everything your GPS would do -- and actually even more. I can look at the geocaching.com website from my phone, navigate to the cache using the built-in GPS, and then actually log my find from the cache site on my phone. Couldn't be any easier.

Maybe if more folks here get interested Beth would create a geocaching section.

Basically, no. If you've got a high-end one it might, but I don't know for sure. I tried it with my Nuvi 255W and it didn't -- doesn't get close enough.

You can go to geocaching.com to check there. They have a forum and I'm sure that question's been asked there.
