Got Propane?

Some of you know I *never* turned on the gas in my Roadtrek in the TWO years since I bought it. (no laughing, I'm a hydro power kind of girl, have never even lived in a house with a gas stove).
Anyway, my favorite RV guy (transplanted to TX from my hometown in CA) tested the system in my Roadtrek and gave me a little (actually BIG) pep talk about how safe it is and I'm excited to say that I think I will actually be brave enough to USE it now!!!! It was so COOL to have HOT water out of the tap, WOW, I feel like a real rvwoman now!

ROFLMAO!!! I didn't know that...why didn't you say something up in Barstow?? We would have gone over the whole system until you were comfortable with it. It's not hard to check for leaks...piece of cake. You're to funny, MF!! Welcome to the world of hot water! Didn't you cook in it? For some reason thought you did...maybe only microwave?

Diana, I'm not far ahead of you in the use of propane. I grew up with gas stoves and heaters and it scared the heck out of me trying to lite them. My water heater in my RV stays on electric. My refrigerator won't switch to propane and if I have some other more pressing reason to bring it to the shop I will get it looked at. Guess it would be handy to have if dry camping but I like electricity a lot. lol I have never tried the furnace in my RV because I would have it checked over before I lit it and that would involve removing a sofa to get to it. I have a heat strip in my air conditioner and I don't plan on camping anywhere I will need more than that. I do use my stove top to cook more than the microwave. The 2 RVs I had with ovens I could never get them lit.

Like learning to use the new electronics and computers. I can't remember everything I know and I didn't want to have to learn how to operate the satellite and new TVs but I can't bribe my boys to go anymore.

Good for you, Diana. If you have it, you might as well use all the benefits. Just a learning curve, as it is for us all.

Congrats, Diana. I think you'll really enjoy having all the benefits of an rv that using propane will give you - including heat when it's cold, and yes, the hot water for dishes, etc. I happen to prefer a gas stove, so was thrilled with that in rv's. Now, when you run out of propane now that the benefits will grow on you - then you'll be upset with yourself! (I've never run out yet - but always expect that day will come - might this summer connected to the big tank).

I can relate to your propane fears. I'm not one to monkey with it either. Never bothered me until we had a fire on our Coleman stove once. Line leading from the little propane cylinder got a leak and it flared up. Fortunately dad was able to yank it off the stove before we lost the whole thing and we had out fire extingusiher there as well. But after that episode, I have been so darn leary of propane. I do however use it on my TT as far as the water heater is concerned and a few times I have used the furnace. Haven't used the stove yet though. Might get the nerve this summer. Although I rarely use my electric stove at home either. Forman Grill and BBQ grill (in nice weather) are my primary sources of cooking as well as reheating in the micro. And I plan to get a new toaster oven to cook some meals in as well as crock pot too.

I share your fear of propane. When I was first married, we had a gas stove. I was wearing a flannel nightgown and turned the stove on. It whooommped and the front of my nightgown got singed, although the fire went out immediate. The lesson I learned was that you need to keep the stove top free of grease.

I think I would get used to it in a motorhome, however, because you really need it for so many things. After all, so many peolple use it without problems. And the CO detector would really help.

I do like the idea of an electric heater as a backup, however.

I, too, have always been leery of propane and gas of any kind. However, I do use the propane in my trailer for hot water, heat, boon-dock refrigeration, and stove top cooking when I cook at all. This house in FL has natural gas for heat, and hot water, and I find I can light the pilot lights when/if I need to. I am still very much more relaxed with electricity, however. With the price of kerosene for heating fuel for my Monitor Heater back home getting prohibitive to afford, I am considering changing to propane for heat back there, if I discover it's cheaper. Money can be a big reason for change!
