Borrego Springs

To kick off my Spring Break I did a little camping with some friends in Borrego Springs. This sleep little town is about 60 mi. SE of Palm Springs, close to the Salton Sea. It's very small, and not known for much of anything except being close to a lot of off-road areas. The state park is large and there are many trails to hike.

Saturday morning 9 of us took off on a short (3 mi. round trip) hike to Palm Canyon. The weather was perfect -- low 60s when we started out with no wind. We left early and beat the crowds.

It was a fairly flat path, and we had fun playing around while we walked.

We missed the wildflowers by about 3 weeks, but cacti and some bushes were in bloom. This one has "special" properties and is much-loved by those who enjoy smoking new & different things. Can't remember what it's called ...

The creek bed had water in it, and in several places we had to cross over.

Not a very good picture, but there's a small waterfall with a little pool below:

That's the creek behind me ...

Once we got to Palm Canyon we were met with lots of water & greenery -- very lush for a desert. And there were hummingbirds everywhere!

This gives you an idea of the Coachella Valley looking from the top of Palm Canyon. Very big -- and flat!

We were lucky to not run into any rattlesnakes, as their babies are coming out en masse right now. They don't have rattles, making them awfully dangerous. Lots of lizards, and even some big horn sheep on the sides of the hills. It was a great hike!

Laura, looks like a lot of fun! That white flower, I saw a lot of those along the roadside up near Joshua Tree. They are so pretty! Didn't know you can smoke 'em tho! :o Can't think of the name of them either...

That reminds me that I still need to upload my pics from my hike in Palm Springs yet.

Looks like you're enjoying Spring Break! We were there a few years ago and did that same hike. Thanks for the info on the baby snakes. We're in Benson, AZ and planning on hiking so I'll try and keep my eye out for them. Looking forward to more pics. carold

What a neat hike...will have to put that State Park on my list when I'm out that way. Thanks for taking us along with all those pictures. Now Laura, what's the difference between you hiking where there might be lurking rattlesnakes, and me kayaking near gators...huh?

I think the plant may be Angel Trumpet....(used to have some in my yard)...for medicinal purposes only.

A likely story, Liz! After all, you DID think your neighborhood was going to the druggies!

Very nice pics, Laura-----thanks for the tour! Have a fun vacation!

Laura thanks so much for sharing your Borrego Springs pix. I know I asked this before but did you get a chance to see the metal sculptures?

You can survive a snake bite but not a gator bite!

What neat pictures and a fun hike!
Lucky you!

I was trying to find that flower - it's so gorgeous - and found this site...might be interesting for those hikes.

USED TO HAVE??? Does that mean that you SMOKED all of them for medicinal purposes or just got rid of them the old fashioned gardening way? ( I'm thinking the former) :o

Laura, looks like you all had a wonderful time. Great way to start the spring break. Linda

Think the white flower was called "Loco weed", which is pretty self explanatory. I seem to remember hearing not to let horses nibble on that weed. Course, they don't smoke. Angel Trumpet sounds much better.

Nice pics, Laura. We do have a lot of nice hiking spots in SoCal.

Great pictures Laura! I've camped there but it was for off roading, not hiking! DH wasn't into walking when he could drive. LOL!
