Yipee!!! Home at Guadalupe Park!!!

Postby retiredhappy » Thu Sep 18, 2008 7:03 pm

Went in to work this morning and they had changed the schedule AGAIN. Tuesday they had taken me off the schedule next week entirely so I called Guadalupe and changed my arrival date. Then today they put me back on the schedule. They had told me they were taking me off next week because their new workampers were arriving and they didn't need me. Then they called and said the new people couldn't make it till week after next thus putting me BACK on the schedule. I told them I had already changed my arrival date and wasn't going to change it again. They then said I didn't need to finish the day. MY HOUSE HAS WHEELS and I was out of there within an hour. life's too short and my blood pressure is too high for that crap. Have to say working for a city municipality makes the KOA's look really good. Too bad management is so screwed up as the park is really pretty. They are for the first time instituting monthly rates; $435 for 30am including electricity. I thought about it then found out if any friends come to visit you they have to pay $4 for a day pass. I don't think so!! No laundry, no propane deliveries inside the park, no wifi and no cable. There's so much to do here at Guadalupe so, for me, its the better choice. Glad to be at my homebase and not working for a few months. I'll resume my Meals on Wheels delivery tomorrow.

Lake Jennings County Park in Lakeside, CA, near San Diego, also has a $1 visitor fee. Yes, they have hookups but no sewer hookup (although they do have a dump site) and you can only stay there three weeks at a time with a week in-between. Weird. The other county park I like doesn't have the $1 fee - much nicer to not have your guests have to pay for visiting. Dumb rule.

Good Decision Karen! I'd have scattered gravel from the driveway I'd have been out there so fast! Folks like that just don't know how to treat workers. Then they wonder why they can't get anyone to stay or return for another "hitch"...

Karen, glad to hear you are "home" and happy. MMMM KOA is looking good  Life is definitely too short to put up with what you don't have to. Many state and county parks are charging a visitor fee as their budgets are being cut back. (maybe they should just cut back on incompetent help) HA. carold

Karen,
If you'd been at your home park during the hurricane, you would have met lots of people from my park - many of the workampers went there and loved the stay.

The place I workamped at last year had a visitors fee - but I did understand that one- as the visitors intended to use all the facilites (pools, etc) and too many visitors and the guests were complaining. Plus they only allowed so many people per campsite, and that included visitors. That said, I never have quite understood the visitors fees on the places without the amenities - especially to the seasonals.

Hi Karen. glad you are no longer working in that uncomfortable atmosphere. I'll bet Guadalupe is glad to have you early!

What impact will your leaving Schriner have on our GTG? Should we change plans back to Guadalupe? I think the only reason we opted for the other one was the cabin prices, right? Have Calicogirl, (Kathy), or Mtngal, (Diana), confirmed yet?

It doesn't matter to me where we spend the week, so either is fine, I'm just hoping there aren't hard feelings by the Schriener management.

Don't worry about the GTG - its a beautiful park and I have no problem being a "guest" there. Its got lots of trees altho I guess a lot of them will be bare when we're there. Going to check this morning on the van.

Made several calls and there is one place in Kerrville, National Car Rental, that would have either a van or SUV that would seat 8 people. For 3 days (pick up Weds and return Sat morning) it would be $69.50 a day (About $230 with tax) and includes 450 miles. That would be about $30 per person. Is this okay with everyone? They're going to call me back Monday with precise figures.

Glad to hear you are out of a bad situation! I'm coming in so late on some of these threads, I always hate to ask questions. That's why I don't reply to most posts, but... Is Guadalupe a CG? Or is it your town? It sounds like you work at a CG & then go to another one. Will you be working at Guadalupe? :D :D

I know these are a lot of questions, but I'm curious. Enquiring minds want to know?!  I am very glad you are back where you feel comfortable. Life is too short to stay unhappy!

Don't feel bad about asking questions - we're all pretty nosy.

Guadalupe is a "RV resort". One side is wooded and one side is pretty open. The sites are pretty good size and there's lots to do here. 2 outside swimming pools and one inside (heated). They have a lot of workout equipment (same room as the indoor pool), a jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. There is also one of the 3 laundries in the room as the pool so I throw a load of laundry in and go swimming (or will when they get it heated). There's a little pub with outside tables and live music on the weekends (only until 10pm). There' a rec hall where they have their potlucks, a video game room for kids, and lounge area with TV. They pick up your garbage every day - just put it at the end of your site by 10am. You can get propane delivered to your site. I close to a big open field to walk the dogs and can go down by the river and walk along the river. They have free wifi (which I don't need), cable is available for $10 a month and they have free local phone hookup so I'm not eating into my cell phone minutes. They do use workampers but I'm not working here. Thought about it but decided I just wanted my homebase to be work free. Besides they usually want couples anyway. I've never wanted to work all year long - just enough to get me out of Texas in the summer when its so humid.

Feel free to ask any questions you want. Its how we all learn and we're all a pretty nosy bunch.

I think that is so cool! :D I would love to do that. I'm going to set that as my retirement goal. I'm going to start looking now for my home base. I had no idea til I joined this forum that ppl actually lived in their RV's. I could rent my house, pack up the Naked Pups & hit the road! Sounds like heaven to me! :D :D :D

Guadalupe is in Kerrville, Texas. The reason I didn't set the GTG there is that they are kinda expensive compared to the city park and their cabins are really much higher altho I don't think any of our ladies are getting a cabin.
