Winter Camping, Southern CA Style

Well, after yesterday's monsoon today has dawned bright and shiny. A little soggy, but beautiful nonetheless. We're supposed to get more rain later today, so our window of exploring might be a bit short.

I've taken a few pictures of my campsite & the campground, just so those of you can see what a little winter camping on the Left Coast looks like.

My little Hideout, car, and the infamous portable satellite dish:
Image

The view from the back of my site. This is a very large campground situated around Lake Casitas. The lake was used for the 1984 Olympic Games and the park was the beneficiary of lots of upgrades. It's been well-maintained. The lake is off to the left of the stream, but I can't see it from here.
Image

Looking down the street from my site. My SCCamper friends are down that way. When we have GTGs we each have to make our own reservations and often don't get sites together. This is a very popular camping weekend and sites are taken quickly. Notice the palm trees? ;)
Image

Looking up the street. I love the combination of tropical and forest with the different types of trees. The sites are fairly close together, but I've got nice neighbors. There are rarely shrubs between campsites -- takes up too much room, and space is at a premium in campgrounds. Good thing RVers are a friendly bunch!

I'll take some more pics as Jed & I go exploring. Right now he's chasing something in his sleep on the couch next to me. :)

More later, I hope!

Laura, what's your tow vehicle??? It looks so small compared to your trailer...

Mitch, I've got a 2004 Explorer V8. It's rated at 7200# but I'd never pull that much. My trailer comes in at about 6000# totally loaded, but I tow pretty light -- maybe 5 gal. of water & empty holding tanks. Propane (big bottles) and 2 big batteries are the only extra big items. Keystone states that the weight listed on their stickers includes everything in the trailer, so I'm pretty confident about towing with the Explorer.

The only issue I had moving from the hybrid to the Hideout was the way the trailer tongue is attached to the body of the trailer. On the Hideout it's much lower & changed the whole hitch setup on the Explorer. Plus, the tongue weight was a bit more, causing the Explorer to be uneven. I had custom airbags added to the rear suspension and all is well again.

I don't have any concerns pulling this trailer, but I sure wouldn't go bigger. In an ideal world I'd get a Ford F150. But the Explorer is paid for and runs well.

How's that for a long answer to your short question? ;)

Nice looking campground! Will have to check that out one day. I was also wondering about your tow vehicle. Thanks for the info. I wish I could pull something with my little car. I think mine is only good for about 1000 pounds so can't pull much with it. Maybe a tiny pop-up. Glad it stopped raining enough to get out and roam around some. Supposed to be more rain coming in this afternoon.

Hey Barbie, if your only doing weekend camping and such you could check into getting one of the little teardrop TT's. Or even check into a small motorcycle camping trailer. they sure don't weigh much at all. I had one and it weighed only 650lbs. They don't have all the amenities but you would be up off the ground and in a "bed". The teardrop TT's go from bare minimum to a hatch on the back with a little tiny kitchen. You can google them.

This will give ya a small idea of looks. But out there you should be able to pick up a used one!

Holy smokes! I clicked on the accessory button and some of them are camping is style!

Love that campground. Maybe someday.... When I first looked at the picture of your Hideway I thought it had gotten banged up, but then realized that the shadow from the tree branches were causing that. Great looking TT. Glad you are enjoying it.
