KEEPING FEET WARM

I remember reading a post a couple of days ago, where somebody had asked for some advice for us northerners as to how we keep our feet warm in cold weather. I don't remember where I saw that post or who wrote it, but I wanted to reply to it.

I get sweaty feet too and in cold weather, I have trouble keeping them warm. I have found though, that if you put foot powder on before you put on your socks, that helps greatly as it keeps your feet from sweating. Secondly, don't wear pure cotton socks. They are the worst for getting wet and therefore giving you cold feet. If you can, see if you can find some Merino Wool socks. Wool is well known for it's insulating capabilities even when wet. But most of us can't tolerate wearing pure virgin wool cause it's itchy.

Beacuse I live in a cold winter climate, I of course have to keep insulated boots on hand for those days when I am blowing snow, walking my dogs etc. But I have also discovered that LL Bean's Snow Sneakers are well worth the money in terms of keeping feet dry and warm no matter what the weather.

I bought a pair last year and just love them. Bought another pair this year too even though I am still wearing the ones from last year. They are ideal for walking in colder weather, doesn't even have to be winter weather. I've been in slush, rain, wet grass, snow etc. and my feet have stayed warm and dry no matter what. I wear them all the time when I go places up here outside of what I mentioned above about wearing my heavier boots. Even in the fall doing yard work, puttering in the garage etc. They are so lightweight that you don't even know you have them on. I have the mid cut ones as I think they are warmer and give you some support too. And they have excellent traction on slippery surfaces.

So you might want to give these ideas a try. Somebody else out there might have some ideas too.

There is some very old advice that if your feet are cold, you need to put on a hat. That is because when your body is too cool, it shuts down blood slightly to your extremities. So I find that putting on a sweater or a long-sleeve shirt will warm up my feet. I also wear socks in the house during the really cold weather--I live in Michigan, but not quite as far north as Colliemom.

I also find my feet really feet hot during warm weather, so I think part of surviving cold weather is getting used to it.

However, I am still trying to find somewhere warm to live so I don't have to keep my feet warm anymore.

OOHH - I love those boots, they look like they'd be awesome.
I almost always have a pair of sox on, in the winter it's to keep my feet warm and the rest of the time it's because I really don't like feet, even my own ! (Yes, I'm a freak  )
Guess my feet don't get real cold - I have some fairly warm boots and I usually have just plain old cotton sox - I do own a couple pr of the wool ones and they're super warm.
At night I wear sox & usually have at least one cat and Molly laying with me to help keep me warm !
A little off topic - but I recently read that if you have a bad cough, put Vick VapORub on your feet then put sox on and it'll help calm your cough - I like the VapORub 'cause it softens my feet and helps get the kincks out after a long day on my feet.

My grandma used to put that on my chest when I had a cold and I loved the smell of it! And it worked! Not sure how putting it on your feet would help a cough tho? It is the vapors that sooth your nasal passages and throat.

Those boots look really comfy. Don't need them now tho. Would like to get some nice lightweight hiking boots tho. Will have to check that site to see what they have for that.

Trudy, I've heard that about putting Vick's on your feet if you have a cough. I haven't tried it, since I can't stand to wear socks when I sleep either.

Barbie we'd get our chest rubbed down with it in the winter, too. I remember when we would get out our flannel gowns from the winter before and they still had that smell to them!

My Mom and I were told by hospital staff that the soles of the feet is the most sensitive skin on your body!!! So yeah I guess I can understand the vicks on the feet thing.

Barbie!! Be warned if ya go to LL Bean website. You will find EVERYTHING there. Living in ME I went to the store more than once and came out lighter in the pocket than when I went in!!!! Made the mistake of taking my son up to the store. OMG!! He was worse than a kid in a candy store. He was just a bigger kid with different kinds of toys. He had a ball and bought a tent, other camping equip, a jacket, 2 sweaters, 6 pair of socks and a windbreaker! He has since then ordered a number of things from LL Bean. Their return policy is fantastic!!!! And if something rips or breaks? They will replace it!

Thank you, Sue. I'm the one who asked the other day as I couldn't keep my feet from getting numb while trying to clear soggy mess in flooded garage (cold, wet concrete). The only shoes I own are leather tennis, Crocs, and a pair of open summer slippers.
Those boots look good and if we keep getting snow around here, think it would be a good investment.

Nice boots Sue! LL Bean is the best.

Last summer we were camping in Eastern Sierra, June Lake. My sister got the crazy idea to go to the thrift store to look for snow stuff for her grandsons. It was August! :D But I'll be darned if she didn't score big time. Snow pants for each of the boys for $3 a pair. No boots to fit, but I bet she checks it out again next summer.
