Ladder collapse

Was hanging a wall quilt the day before New Year's eve when my "Little Giant" knockoff ladder collapsed flat. I caught my right hand under one of the rungs & sliced my knuckle up pretty good. Not to mention the bruises. Went to the emergency room ... got them stitched up. No broken bones & no tendon damage... though my hand & wrist are very bruised. Had my hand in a brace for three days. Trying it today without the brace.

Did some research ... and it turns out that "knockoff" is actually made by Cosco -- the same company that makes the "Little Giant" ladder (You may have seen it in the TV informercials with Dean Johnson). I sent them an email ... it should NOT have failed.

I'm probably going to contact an attorney.

I'm so sorry that you are hurting. I hope your hand gets better soon...

What is the name of the knockoff? I ask because my dad had a collapse as well. I'm gonna ask him if he's got the Costco one as well. He split his head wide open and nearly bit complete through his lower lip. He swore he had it set up right.

Wow. Another collapse? I hope your dad is doing okay. My injuries sound minor compared to his. I didn't have the ladder extended at all (in terms of height). Just pulled the legs apart to climb up a few feet.

The name of the company is Cosco, and I bought the ladder at Costco. Cosco makes the "Little Giant" ladders from the infomercials. This ladder doesn't have the "Little Giant" name, but it's made by the same guys.

Did he contact Cosco? I checked with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission web site to see if there were any ladder recalls. None.

BTW, I decided on my New Year's Resolution: I will have an injury-free 2011. You read it here first.

I've always hated ladders - don't trust them. So glad you weren't hurt worse than you were, Janice, but sorry you were hurt at all. Let us know what you find out when you contact them!

And, wow Li, hope your Dad is ok now - that sounds bad.

I, too, have a little giant fake at home, but I have no idea what brand it is. I didn't get it in Cosco, however. The few times I used it to paint my upper deck porch two years ago, it seemed safe enough. But I will be very much more careful when using it now! It opens about 5 different ways.

Soos: Look on the round handles on top that you twist to open and close the ladder. If it's the same ladder they should say "Cosco" on them.
