On Christmas day I went to the beach and was binocularizing the huge rocks out off the beach, when I saw something move other than a wave or a bird, it was one of over 100 sea lions on the rocks out there. It was a raining, ocean misty day so the photo is not so good, but to give perspective so you can find them the rock is 100 x 400 ft and they look like slugs up along the top edge all the way down the slope. I drove further down to a cape lookout and saw the rock at an entirely different angle and you could see where the sealions had smoothed the rock with their blubbery bellies as they climbed it over the eons of time, resting on this rock, they, of course have favorites they frequent.

Yesterday went the other direction and hiked the trails above and along the beach, there are "Beware of Bears" signs posted so I clapped my hands and yelled "Hey bear bear bear" as I went along my merry way, no one was there but me but if anyone heard me I would have felt "silly". Got out to the cliffs and beaches and stayed back for undercuts are likely, no way to see if they are there or not. The wind gusts were mind-blowing and so much fun. I scoped out the tree conditions and stayed clear of broken limbs and figured even though these gust are strong to me, they are a 'day in the park" to these rugged trees.

I saw squall after squall out on the horizon amidst sun breaks. A major black squall was headed my way so I high-tailed it back to the truck exactly in time. I had to push on my door to get it to open as the wind was so intense, then once inside there came hail just pooring down. It passed in minutes and the sun was out again. totally cool!

So, this is what it has come to, I have been alone for 2.5 weeks with very few conversations with humans; a seagull flew over my head and I spoke sweetly to it as it passed by and it made an immediate about-face and landed at my side about 6 ft away. So, we held a long one-sided conversation. Of course I knew he just wanted to use me as a lunch stop so I gave him a healthy organic cranberry oatmeal bar. We were buddies for a moment in time.

What a great outing you had! Love the pictures of the waves crashing & sea lions. Enjoyed your commentary too. I never feel lonely when I'm alone amidst such beauty and wildlife. And it's especially nice to come back here and share those special finds with us. Thanks.

Absolutely beautiful pictures, KD. I loved the seagull story too. You are a better woman than I...it seems you are enjoying the alone time. I'm not so good with alone time aside from inside the house with the cats. When I see something as beautiful as you were seeing, I have this desparate need to share on the spot. Just one other person is required...someone who can share the "omigawd, look at all those sea lions...."

Speaking of sea lions, I remember driving up the central CA coast after hearing from the B&B owner that it was mating season and all the local sea lions were coming ashore. So up north we drove. As we got out of the car, we heard this sound over and over...without meaning to offend anyone, it sounded like loud wet farts. :o So we trek up a path and see the "girls" up on the shore rocks sunning themselves. The "boys" were all out in the surf making the loud noise...it's "sex talk" in sea lion language. The girls did not appear to be impressed. :? We trek farther up the path into a strong wind...to where we heard there were many, many critters. Turns out there was about a mile of sea lions beached. Unfortunately, the wind was coming into faces and the smell was nearly toxic. :( :o But the vision of a mile's worth of sea lions was awesome. Your picture of the sea lions on the rocks could be the same group just moved north...cuz there are a lot of them in your picture.

Keep posting the gorgeous pictures...it's wonderful to share your journey. Thank you!

It is such a small world - you and Vickie were in the same spot at the same time and hadn't even met yet!
Unbelievable. Cool.

I don't want to sound sour or defeated but I have concluded over a lifetime that another person standing along side of you at a glorious "oh my gawd" moment will rarely, if ever, have the same immensity of feeling as you, or even comeclose to it. The Grand Canyon in the morning light, an elk eating apples from a tree, a doe leaping having just mated with a buck, are all "oh my God" moments and it is God that shares them with me at the same intensity because..... He gets it!

With all my heart I hope you are one of the lucky ones that finds that "soul mate"

Thanks for sharing them with us.....and when ever you are standing there (with your camera :) ) know that your sharing reminds all of us of places we have seen or places and things we dream of seeing in the future...... :)

Exactly. My time alone with nature is my must wonderful AND must humbling moments. And it's very rare anyone else understands it or sees it as I do. Most of the time, in my past, when I was with someone and having one of those wonderful moments, instead of sharing them, my moments got ruined. I'm blessed to be able to realize this and enjoy each of these moments on my own. Of Course, Peaches (or previously Moxie and Tips - shared many of these moments with me :) ) Please, continue to enjoy these moments you have, and don't let your being there without that "partner" make them any less than they are - glorious. Took me a long time to get there - and now, more often than not, would rather not have anyone with - because instead of sharing - they'd "ruin" my moment, more times than not.

Sorry - not being negative here - telling the truth.

Love the pics - and yes, can see the sea lions. One of my fav days in AK, I watched the sea lions come in for a feast at high tide, in the rain. When tide whent back out, so did the sea lions, and then the bears came in to feast. Both were eaually beautiful - and both were in miserable, cold, rainy, grey weather. None of that made it any the less spectacular. Would stand there again all those hours to see the same thing.

I love the Oregon coast - and most all coasts - but is so spectacular there - one day calm, one day crazy - and always beautiful.

I agree with Li. When I'm looking in awe at something I want to be by someone who is experiencing it, too. I guess I'm not a loner, per se. I grew up in a large family and always had someone to share life with. That being said. I do love my "alone" time, too, just not in big chunks.
