Need some ideas...

Postby BarbaraRose » Mon Dec 06, 2010 3:36 pm

OK, so I can't get satellite TV because I face the wrong direction, so I called Time Warner and they want $40/mo which I can't afford right now. I know it is possible to watch TV on-line but I don't have a clue how to do that. I mostly want to be able to see some prime time shows like Two and a Half Men, Ghost Whisperer, etc.
Any ideas on how I can do that?

This is what I do; If you go online to CBS, ABC etc they generally have a "watch full episodes" place to click. The shows are generally a week later, but, hey! You might not get shows you like or want, but it beats staring at a blank wall.

You may be able to pick up some local stations with rabbit ears antenna. $0.00/mo. I can get quite a few in my RV with just antenna.

Depending on what she has, some problems that could crop up are 1) S L O W connection, not good enough to stream video, and 2) you'd eat up her bandwidth pretty quickly, IF she has a limit.

So, you will have to find out what she has. You don't want to surprise her with a HUGE bandwidth overage bill!! :o

I have the converter box hooked to my tv, cost me $9 and I get all the free local
channels which is plenty for me cause I usually just watch cbs the majority of the
time.

Echo, if you're using an air card for your internet connection and watch many videos you'll suck up your data allowance like a sponge. And if you're using the campground's wi-fi and they have a policy against watching video you might get yourself in a heap of trouble.

Watching video and pay-for-data just don't mix. But the companies that provide data plans don't tell you that. They just charge you an arm & leg when you exceed your allowance.

I'm just saying ...

Barbie

I don't know for certain that there's still Federal money, but there was a program to help folks get their digital converter boxes for free. They cost about $40 each, but they allow you to access the over the air in the new digital formats. Please read through this link to get all the details...it's a one-time buy (assuming there may not be any more Fed dollars to help), and then you hook it up and you're good to go for the "regular" local channels. hope this is helfpul!

Mitch, Jed's just fine. Thanks for asking. :) He's just finished his dinner & "shared" his obligatory burp with me. Can't get much better than that!

Barbie, if you've got a new TV it's probably already digital, so there'd be no need for a converter box. Another option would be to get a tuner for your computer. I don't know what the "official" name for them is, but you can get a piece of hardware to attach to your computer & turn it into TV. Best Buy carries them. Might want to check them out, too.
