Herschel's Maiden Voyage

Okay Kayaking fans this is my report.

Boat registration attached.....check
Paddle.................Check
Life preservers.......Check
Sun block..............Check
Water shoes..........Check
Dry bag................Check
Camera................Check
Dry clothes/towel...Check
Sun glasses...........Check
Hat....................Oops!

First the gray haired lady inflated this new kayak in the living room to see if she could figure out all the instructions. I couldn't figure out why I had to put the flashy green thing on for a picture but here I am. I do humor her from time to time. At this point I really can't figure what she is up to :? ...that comes later. :o

Image

So then this morning we head off to nearby Cowen Lake. The lake is popular with sailboat and kayak'ers...no motors over 10 mph allowed. So I get to watch her inflate the whole thing again. I got to tell you, I am a bit puzzled and concerned at this point. That foot pump thing makes strange squeeky sounds and I heard some general muttering..... I think the look on my face expressed my concern well enough.

Image

Now how much of this stuff is coming with us. We aren't camping out there you know? What do you mean that there will still be room for me?

Image

I don't mind sitting here on dry land but.....what comes next? At least the water looks nice. Hey, is the fishing any good?

Image

Now the next few minutes are not captured on tape. I will admit that I was not a big fan of getting in the kayak. Did you know that that thing moves  :o when it is on the water and she expected me to just sit there! :? Well she promised that no one caught my lack of gracefulness on tape to be seen later on U-tube.....and with great encouragement and several false/awkward attempts, I did what she asked. Boy this better be worth it.... :| :? So far I am not a fan!

That seems nice.
Image

Are you sure this thing is safe?

Image

Okay, I like water.

Image

Hey, what is that stuff? Lilly pads you say. Interesting.

Image

Image

This really isn't so bad. :) I can see lots of stuff from here. Birds, other kayak'ers. No one has threatened my life. This thing is pretty stable.

Image

Image

Okay, okay, I admit it. I was wrong to protest. This really is okay! :)

Image

And these lilly pads are neat. They have blooms and seed pods and mysterious passages....

Image

Image

Way back here in the back of the inlet.....we aren't in Kansas anymore..... :)

Image

Image

Image

Yes, I think this is working for me......

Image

So after successfully getting me back on dry land, with an opportunity for me to swim just a little while she was packing the kayak in, we threw the kayak in the back of the car and headed over to my grandpa's property. ....Something about rescuing a broken pond fountain from the middle of the pond so that folks could figure out why it isn't working. I heard there was a bit of slime and the usual pond funk involved but she didn't let me ride out with her when she pulled the weights up and paddled the fountain back to the dock. I was a bit worried that she would go off without me but then the pond isn't that big so I just kept my eye on her. I knew I could swim it if I had too. 8-) :D

After rescuing the fountain we found out another good use for the kayak..... well if I couldn't ride with her I'm glad that someone else got to go out and enjoy. Marin's mommy had brought her life jacket down to the pond so she got ride! That is me and Marin's daddy standing on the dock watching the fun. Marin didn't want to turn around and look at the camera. She just wanted to enjoy the ride.

Image

That's all for today. We didn't even pack the kayak away. We just deflated it and loaded it back in the Kia Sportage. The weather this week here in SW Ohio is suppose to be spectacular. I think the kayak is heading off to the Little Miami River next. I don't know if I will get to ride or if Izzy will get to. She gets her stitches out Mon or Tues so she might enjoy the opportunity to get wet. Tina says that the kayak takes up a little more room than she wishes and weighs a little more than she wishes but....it carries me around (and other passengers) like she wishes. And it even allows her to get in and out without her feeling like she needs to be a gymnastic star. So I guess that means we will find room to haul it around in the RV. :D I suggested leaving the other dogs behind to make room but she said that was not an option.   Just for that she made me responsible for reminding her to bring a hat next time. Like it was my fault she forgot one!

What a neat kayak adventure you had, Herschel. How nice that the gray-haired lady picked you to be the first passenger. You can tell Remi et al all about it. I'm sure you'll have many more kayak adventures even if you do have to share. Tell Tina those are nice photos of the lilies.

Well, i have sure had my big laugh for the day. What a great story teller you are Herschel. Looks like you had a great day, and really nice adventure. I got my kicks out of reading it. Thank you. Doesn't look like the grey headed lady did you any harm, and I'm glad you had a great time and got a swim in too.

Abby, got her post in first, don't believe any of that stuff, Herschel. I'm really not interested in marriage, but you might be able to change my mind!!! I'm not pushy, shoving like she is.

See you soon,
Maggie

Herschel it sure looks like you had a great time with the grey haired lady but don't expect me to go for a ride in Arkansas! I don't like new stuff and not sure I'm gonna like something she calls a lake. Mom used to load me up on that 4 wheel thingy she had and that was scary but now she has another kind and it's kind of fun. She takes me out in the sand to run up and down the big hills. She said if you ever come to where we live she'll take you for a ride. I like your idea of leaving Izzy and Remi home, I'd sure like to leave that cat at home but Mom said he's going and that's that. Would you like to trade one of yours for mine?? Cats can be fun. They run really fast when you chase them!

Keep on having fun and Mom says we'll see you soon!

Chewy, don't give her ideas. We have two cats here in Ohio. On did go with us to a Life On Wheels Conference in Bowling Green KY back in 2005. He liked it okay but I'm sure he would insist in putting his litter box somewhere I want to put a dog bed! You know how pushig those confident cats can be....they think they are important or something! ....so we just remind him how lost "feral" kitty, Gus, would be without his idol Ed and Ed agrees to stay home.

I might go out with my Mom when we next see you, Herschel - so maybe you can convince yours that you two need to come along. I'm not quite as fond of the kayak as you are - I want to get out and explore and Mom doesn't think that's a good idea. I think I'd do better around lily pads than around other shorelines, though. Mom will have to take me somewhere other than this lake we're at so I can find out. Meantime she goes out a lot without me. And I'd rather be with her, even in that "thing" than left behind.

Peaches

Dear Maggie,

I heard my Mommy tell my Daddy that you're a Lady of the Evening...those aren't the exact words I heard, though. But I thought you were a dog, not a sloth. And I thought a trumpet was an instrument...my Mom must have a lisp because she tried to say strumpet. And you must love fishing a lot because she said you were a really clever hooker...

We're you ever in gymnastics? Mommy said your could really work your legs...

Love,
Abby

Herschel's such a great sport!

I saw a German Shepard today riding in a side car of a motorcycle! It was really cute! Looked like he was really enjoying himself too! Dogs are SO cool!
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

Hi, Herschel...

Wow, looks like a fun day....you are braver than I am....don't like to ride in anything that doesn't have 4 wheels and it has to be enclosed....The "Bald-headed guy" tries to get me to ride in that Gator thing at the Campground in GA...but I'll have nothing to do with it....I like to swim/wade in the water....don't know about riding on it.. ...Mom says you look handsome in you Life Jacket....she likes green.... ;) Thanks for the photos and the story....Mom is still laughing.....

Hey, fellow kayaker! I am seasoned kayaker so I could have told you that you would like it ;) I'm not even afraid to get in, most of the time. It is very relaxing to me so I usually take a nap on the towels my mommy brings for me. She hasn't gone kayaking for awhile, but I'm sure she will take me next time she goes. We take long walks together and sometimes I get to run along when she rides her bicycle. I got to go with her a couple of times when she got out those skates like the Dog Whisperer wears. She thought she was cool, but she hurt her back  Guess we won't be doing that again for awhile! She used to have a motorcycle and she would take me for rides. I like to be included in things she does. She calls me a mamas boy. What does that mean? I guess it must be good because she hugs and kisses me a lot  She even bought me a new soft bed that she put next to her on her bed. I'm not really spoiled or anything. Hey...maybe someday we can go kayaking together! We will remind your mommy to take her hat. My mommy wears one kayaking, too....and she always takes snacks.

Herschel, what a fun time it looks like you had! My grey-haired keeper takes me out in the big yellow paddle boat with my life jacket on, as I absolutely HATE the water----even wet grass makes me cringe! But I love standing on the bow of the paddle boat, watching for those danged beavers that suddenly appear from under the water and SLAP their tails, getting me all wet! I also like to go in the canoe with its outriggers on...there is plenty of room to sleep in there, and those pontoon thingies make it very stable....in fact, my keeper can even stand up in the canoe with those on. I have heard her say we will be exploring the byways of FL this upcoming winter, rather than skiing this year. I will miss skiing, but am looking forward to seeing some different areas, too.

I think I would love you, Herschel, as you are so handsome-----but I would NOT follow you into the water for anything! Thanks for posting those neat pics of your first kayaking voyage-----especially the one in the safety of the living room!
