Traveling with a full or partial-full water tank in your 5th

Hi,

Traveling with a full or partial-full water tank in your Fiver or TT: Some say to fill it up to help balance the weight on the back end of truck. Some say add enough water in case you need to pull over and use the toilet, thus causing the need for water in the tank.

What do you do? Any suggestions or recommendations?

PS I have a 5th wheel camper.

I usually keep enough for use if we have to stop overnight without hookups. That hasn't happened so far, but I'd rather be prepared. Plus it's there for potty breaks along the way. I usually keep the tank at 1/3 full. Remember that one gallon of water weighs 8.35lb. Our freshwater tank is 110 gallons, @ 8.35lb. that would be 918.5 pounds of extra weight.

I agree with Vickie. I have a 30 gal tank and keep 1/4 to 1/4 full when traveling. Always good for the potty breaks. This way you have water for where ever your travels take you. Linda

I have a C - and travel with my fresh water tank full or close to it. I like to know I have water - and I boondock a lot. And I prefer filling when I know I like the water someplace - which isn't always true.

I have 3 friends with 5th wheels who have discussed this - One always travels with theirs full - one travels with theirs 1/4 to 1/2 full and one travels with theirs close to empty. It's truly a personal decision and how you travel, etc. And obviously as many answers as there are people :)

I agree with all the others, we too keep it about 1/4 full, which I use for potty breaks. I am probably weird, but we don't drink from the tank--just a pet "weirdness" of mine. We carry bottled water to use before getting hookups.
Hey, send me a PM and now that we have the wedding over, I can find sometime to meet with you.

We have a 5er and travel with our fresh water tank 1/3 full...(yep, potty breaks, etc.)....Another "helpful hint" we discovered while wintering in Corpus Christi, TX winter before last.....even when you have full hookups, it's helpful for ballast in windy conditions, to fill the fresh water tank while parked... High winds can be scary in a 5er :o ;) and the full tank can help with sleeping thru the night...... ;)

Lori,
What a great idea to file away. Never thought about that, but would be very helpful in windy times. Thanks
