Things to help People Retire

Postby Bethers » Wed Apr 21, 2010 9:30 am

This is a right-on article - about why lots can't retire. And we might not think it applies to us - but when they talk about keeping up with the Jones' - that applies to what rv's we buy, and what we think we need to have in them, etc etc etc -

Good article, Beth. Knowing where your money is going each month, creating a budget, and setting goals are necessary steps to curb impulse spending.

Very sound advice.
Cannot remember the writer's name but first book was "The Millionaire Next Door" (recommended reading for those who are not familiar with it). Anyway he has another book out - title something like "Stop Living like You Are Rich and Live Like A Millionaire". Was surprised to learn that a large number of millionaires in this country are educators who lived frugally and saved during their working years. If one is careful, it is possible.
The only major handicap in life is a bad attitude!

as we were driving yesterday we were searching for a station (radio) and this one guy was talking said he hate lottery's said the average person spends 36 something on lottery tickets a month if a person started at age 25 and put that amount of money into some type of and he said didn't remember what it was till he was 75 he would have over 1million not just a once in a lucky moment but every time...think we think we have to save lots at a time to make it worth while was very interesting

Really good advice. I started getting out of debt years ago, and care not what others live in, or what they own. When you lose everything, life gets you to make some serious decisions. My priorities changed a lot after my husband had heart surgery and could never work again. We lost our home, with all of our life savings included. We lived on about $134.00 a week, and if that doesn't change you, nothing will. From that time on, I have worked to be self sufficient, and owe no one.

Today, I own my own property, will be moving into our finished garage, all necessities included, and owe only one bill a month for our storage units, and they will be empty by the end of this year, maybe by September.

We will, of course, want a phone, a tv, and the internet, but that will be about it, other than a small amount of electric, we will have NO DEBT AT ALL. We are installing solar that will be finished by the end of June.

Life has given us a lot of problems, but I wouldn't change where I am today for ANYTHING.

Being without debt, and a need to have everything, is so outstanding that I can't believe how free it makes you.

To be free to do what you want, when you want, is life really lived, even when what you want is free, like nice peach trees, a great apple tree, a wonderful garden, steamed crabs, with corn on the cob, with your grandkids, crabbing off the pier, and a picnic in your back yard. These are the things that make up a real life FOR ME. AND.... Even if that is not YOUR dream life, being out of debt is still the way to get to YOUR dreams too!

Thanks for the post, it reminded me of how blessed I am.

One thing that always amazed me about the RV lifestyle is the wide range of people's financial situations and habits. We have parked beside huge rolling palaces that cost 3 times more than the average house and we have also seen a very old, small trailer that was totally wrapped in duct tape and an old war surplus tent held together with tape, too! We have camped with all types inbetween. What do they have in common? The ability to still enjoy the exact same lifestyle! Travel where they want. See everything this great country we call home has to offer. In some cases, even enjoy the exact same amenities! At the exact same spot at the exact same time. You can live very cheaply in our chosen lifestyle, or you can spend thousands and live like a Saudi prince. You can make it your total way of life or you can escape just for weekends.

Isn't that amazing?
