Thought some of you might be interested in this trivia about my trip from FL to the TX gtg.

Total days: 14 (13 nights)
Total miles: 2407
Total $ spent on campgrounds: $56.12 (5 nights in cgs; average $11.22/night......... or if you count 8 nights free at beach & Martha's, av. $4.32/night)
Total spent on gas: $490.65
Average price of gas: $2.76/gal

This does not count discretionary spending....eating out at restaurant twice, historic house tour, etc.

Good grief, where did you find campgrounds that cheap? $11.00+ a night? That's amazing! Best we can hope for here at state campgrounds is $18-$24. Private campgrounds and chains like KOAs are even a lot more than that. Good for you!

As I'm not yet on the road with my motorhome I'm no expert, but to me it sounds like you did well for your money!

thanks for the figures Liz, guess I'll be like Beth and do mostly boondocking when the
time comes. I figure one night a week at a full hook up campground will keep me
good to go for another week. Course this is all in about 4 years but I like to
plan ahead

Golden age/access pass = 50% off at National forest, Nat. Parks, & Corps of Engineer cgs. Also, Louisians State Parks honor them as well. FL state parks honor them for FL residents.

FL state park: $8.56 w/water & elec.
Big Biloxi Nat. forest cg, MS: $13 w/water & elec. (stayed there twice)
Nibletts Bluff....where Vickie was camping a county/parish park: $13 w/water & elec. (no discount there)
Corps of Engineers cg in TX: $8.00 w/water & elec.

Nat. forest cgs without hookups are often less or even free.

Wow, that's cheap. Here in Michigan our State Parks average around $24 a night plus you also have to have a permit at $24 yearly or $6 a day but that's going to change this fall when a new program takes effect. Then we will have a choice as to whether or not to pay an additional $10 when we renew our license plates which will allow us to use the State Parks and no more permits. Details aren't totally complete but the parks need the money despertely and it's one way to raise it they hope. All monies will go toward the parks. State and Natinal Forest campgrounds are way cheaper but you don't have hookups.

That reminds me, Liz, I told you the sites were $12. a night, but later saw a sign in the office window that said $13something. I asked the lady if the price had just went up and she said no, I explained I thought I had only paid $12. but she said I was mistaken. When I got back to the truck and looked at the receipt, I was right, it was $12 per night for 7 nights. I guess it was some weekly rate or something, but I apologize for giving you the wrong price, I had forgot about it till I saw your post.

I know....that's why I didn't stay in MI state parks much. But there's a wonderful NF cg in the UP right on Lake Superior where my SIL and I stayed for $6 I think. Also, got discounts at Sleeping Bear and Pictured Rocks. Also stayed at other NF cgs in the lower peninsula. Like Ava said, hookups once a week or so is plenty for me. I like boondocking in beautiful places....not Walmart.

Thanks for explaining your cg costs. That was my first reaction, WOW how cheap. I guess I'll have to start using (researching) nf cgs.

Thanks also for your trip to TX and with Birdie with the pics. Can't wait to start traveling in my B next week, although it will be just to CA for a PW rally, a short trip, but nice to get away.

There are a couple COE campgrounds in VT, but none that I know of here in NY, and Nat. Parks/Forests,.... nada. That's why I didn't think of that. I've never bothered with that Golden age pass as it wouldn't be used for me. Great that you could find them and get that financial break.

Liz finds some great places, but since I don't have the Golden Age pass and chances are they won't honor it many of those places by the time I can get it, I don't go to a lot of them and have to look even harder to find great places. But an occasional night at some of those is worth it to me. It's nice to have hookups here and there - especially when it's cold out. (Probably should say when it's real hot, also, but it's been a long time since I've been able to say that.)

Great breakdown Liz. My biggest expense is usually gas - so the longer I take getting to and from places, the less that feels like a lot. The 2000 miles in one week from AZ to AL, that I will feel. But now sitting still, it will average out.
