Ooh yummy. We didn't buy the canned stuff of course. Mummy made it. It's a steamed pudding with raisins in it, then Bird's Custard poured over. I don't recall Americans making steamed puddings. It's basically a batter of flour, shortening and flavorings, poured into a grease bowl, which is then covered with a damp cloth. It's lowered into boiling water and simmers away for hours! Never met a Spotted Dick I didn't just love!

Ronnie's sister bought him a can of this in a mixture of strange food basket one Christmas. He eat's strange/unusual things, but never got around to opening this can, then I threw it out when we flooded. I think it was the name that didn't sound appealing to him!

One of my favorite Christmas puddings was Suet Pudding and it was a steamed pudding I think although not the way that Sparkles described it
love it and some times I wonder if the name stops us from trying new things....

Bird's Custard. In the 1800's a young chemist's (pharmacist in US) wife was so ill she couldn't keep anything down. Mr Bird was frantic and kept trying to make something she could tolerate. The winner was a concoction of Corn Starch, sugar, vanilla and some other stuff. You boil milk and pour it on a couple of tablespoons of the powder and it makes a hot milky sauce. Depending on how much powder and milk you use you can make a thick or thin sauce. It can also be allowed to cool and is essential for making an authentic Trifle. Instant Vanilla Pudding just doesn't hack it.

Well, lookie here, and the page where I got the photo says you add your own sugar, so you can make it as sweet as you like.
You know I'm going to have to order this entire enchilada and give it a try.
If it's any good, I'll be adding Spotted Dick to the menu at The Blue Marlin!

Well, after reading the list of ingredients this morning, I think I'll be taking a pass on the Spotted Dick - it's full of suet, which from what I've just read is the hardened fat from the kidneys and loins of cows and sheep! That is something I don't think my taste buds would appreciate too much!


And I can't even get the birds to eat it (you know - those greasy squares you get in the bird food section and put on the sides of feeders).
I'll look around for the custard, though.

Warning! It may be an aquired taste. What you grow up with as a child becomes comfort food when you are an adult. DH wasn't impressed. But I can't do without HP Sauce, S & H Curry Mix and Bisto Gravy. When I see these in a store I buy six or more at a time.

Mitch - This doesn't sound like something that would be on your new healthy diet. However, I could be wrong - Sparkle also usually eats a healthy diet so if she eats it .......??
You must have spoiled birds or spoiled food if your birds refuse the suet cakes. A 4x4 suet cake with nuts or berries will last less than a day with birds around here.

All you dieters - here's a taste treat for you. Take 2 thick slices of white bread and thickly spread with Butter. Place French Fries liberaly on the bread, add salt and pepper and a dash of Ketchup. Top with the remaining slice and enjoy. Not sure of the Calorie count on that one. Oh, it's called a Chip Butty and you can order them in restaurants and bars.

Reminds me of something they sold at a zoo I visited in Calgary, BC. French fries with gravey on them!
