It is my grandfather and extended family. He was rushed to the hospital yesterday. He has Pneumonia and a Kidney infection. This morning his kidneys had started to fail. Then he was struggling to breathe. So they have opted to sedate him and put him on a ventilator. He agreed to this, but did state that if he was not better in a week to discontinue it. There is risk even with putting him on the sedation as other things had started to shut down.
He is 91 years old and even though we have been preparing for this day to come. It is still very difficult. I am just sitting here...jumping anytime the phone rings.
I think that is what also make it hard...being so far away. He is San Diego.

HE is in God's hands! We will pray for YOUR comfort. Your grandpa sounds like a smart man who has had a good life. Memories are for YOU to relish. Be thankful you've had him this long!
God bless you and your family.

Even knowing it has to happen sometime, it doesn't help when the time comes. Hopefully he will be with you a few more years. But if he is in pain it is time to let him go where there is no pain.

I spoke to my mom tonight. He is completely sedated and on a ventilator. So what we do know is he had a mild heart attack, pneumonia, UTI. So they talked to him, the dr and gave him the pros and con's of the ventilator. The Dr felt that his body could just not fight the infections due to him having to work so hard to breathe. So he did say he wanted to go on the ventilator but only for 1 week. If he was not doing better to take him off it. They also ran a test for H1N1, the preliminary swab did come back positive. So they have sent it out to lab for confirmation with a better test.
The one thing mom did share with me is that he is afraid to die. I will say he does believe in God and raised his kids in church, but has not been active in church for several years now.
My grandmother( his wife), passed away several years ago. She was also placed on a ventilator, she was on it for 3 weeks and they opted to take her off it. She went on to live another 4 months.

I have a candle lit for your grandpa here today, and am sending strength his way. How wonderful that he was able to make a decision for himself at his age. I think that dying, the 'unknown', is scary for us all, regardless of what we believe about the 'life hereafter.' It is good that he will be sedated while the machine helps him breathe for a bit. No worries, no pain, no fright for him. However, for you and other family members, it will be a long haul. Hugs and strength to you all, as well.
Love from me and Molly

Update: they have made the decision to take him off the respirator. His potassium levels were not good. He will be on comfort care from this point on. The sedation is turned off by this time and according to my cousin he is non responsive. My mom, Karen, Aunt Kay, Aunt Kathy and Aunt Barbara are all at the hopsital with him and according to my mom they will all remain at the hospital.
