Built in 1876 by the prisoners themselves. It also housed women. You could be sent to prison for adultory then. That could come back to haunt me! This is the Guard Tower, Beth climbing the steps.
The Sallyport. A corruption of a french word meaning entry way. A horse and wagon could come in and the gate closed behind it before the next gate was opened.
If you were a prisoner you went through this iron strap gate.
And here was home for however long your sentence was.
The interior. 6 bunk beds. A potty for at night. Note the iron ring in the floor.
For an infraction of the rules you would be chained by a wrist or leg fetter to the ring. Later they made the rule that for an infraction, everyone in the cell was chained. That did not make for popularity.
Remember the adultory rule? They got her. Caught in the act no less. By the way, this is how they did the mugs shots then. One photo, but it gave front view and profile.
I should be rotten and not post mine, but Beth would get such sweet revenge I decided it wasn't worth the risk.
BETH FORGOT TO SIGN OUT ON MY COMPUTER. SO THIS POSTING IS BY SPARKLE IN CASE YOU WERE CONFUSED.
