Boogeyman stories ...

Postby Getupngo » Mon Dec 07, 2009 12:19 pm

Although I am always concerned about my safety on the road, I usually argue against the "boogeyman" posts that try to keep women fearful of going out on the road. But this one gave me pause ...

Man Shot in Wal-Mart Parking Lot

POSTED: Saturday, November 21, 2009

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas -- A 40-year-old man was shot as he was exiting his vehicle in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Northeast Harris County Friday night, Local 2 reported.

The man was not shopping at the store at Beltway 8 and Wilson Road. Instead, investigators believe he just pulled over to park.

The man's pickup truck with a trailer attached was parked in the far north side of the parking lot, away from the entrance of the store.

Harris County deputies said the man opened his door to get out of the vehicle and was met with a man with a gun. The victim was shot in the stomach and is recovering in the hospital.

Deputies called this a crime of opportunity. And with the busy holiday shopping season approaching, they are hoping everyone will take notice that criminals are out there waiting for an opportunity to make their move.

This is scary because I sometimes overnight at Wal Mart. On the other hand, this poor fellow was just getting out of his truck ... he wasn't accosted in his RV. However, that may be a distinction without a difference. When I first read the story, I wondered whether he was in a high-end RV and that made him more of a target. Apparently not.

I suppose none of us -- RVers or not -- are immune from random crime.

It didn't read that he was towing an RV, but a trailer. I take that to mean like a Uhaul etc. Perhaps the gunman was going to drive away with the truck/trailer hoping that whatever was in the trailer was worth selling? JMHO

Hadn't noticed that. I think trailer + Wal Mart = RV'er.

Don't think there's anything to worry about at all. One crime for all the traffic at all the Walmarts. If you worry about all the crime in the US you won't leave your house. Just be careful and watchful. Listen to that gut feeling that all is not well.

Crime picks up here every year around Christmas. I guess the crooks think that people have more money on them this time of year. For 4 or 5 years a woman was abducted from the mall parking lot and they never caught the man. A couple of weeks ago a woman was mugged at the mall and she thinks they used a stun gun on her. I get my behind home before dark and if I go to the mall I go with a friend. I hate that we have to be afraid to go shopping.

People use to ask me if I was afraid to be driving big truck all by myself. Use to tell them, "No". I was more nervous walking across WalMarts parking lot.

Out on the road I am one for always being aware of my surroundings. What and who is around me. When your on home turf so to speak, way to many people relax their guard to much.

Margie just posted the following in her blog:

Well-known RV'ers, Nick and Terry Russell, who held the Gypsy Journal Rally that we attended in September recently had a terrible life-threatening experience. You can read about it in Nick's Blog.

Just thought I'd pass this on as it pertains the subject.

Yeah, you might not be as old, but you'll never be as smart.
