Where's Liz? Cozumel, Mexico

Postby Liz » Tue Dec 01, 2009 2:48 pm

Here are a few scenes from Cozumel, Mexico where I cruised over Thanksgiving weekend with oldest daughter & family.

There’s a lot to see & do aboard a cruise ship. But first you have to meet at your muster station to learn how to don a life vest. Youngest grandson thought this was a muster station.

There’s never enough time in places like this, especially on a cruise. Like Alaska, now I’ve got to go there by RV and stay longer.

Looks like you had an awesome trip!

But I have a question - how'd your grandson enjoy his snorkeling trip, because I didn't see a snorkel anywhere in that picture!
Sure hope he wasn't sucking sea water...

Did you go across to Playa del Carmen? We went on a bus from there to Tulum I think to see some ruins. The water along there was the most beautiful color I have ever seen. My friends went on a cruise for Thanksgiving but they went out of Galveston.

I think cruises are mostly about being on the ship and not a great deal about being in any ports for extended periods of time. How many days were you in port verses on the ship? Just curious.
Great pictures, Liz. Glad you had a great time with family. That's what counts!

You can see his blue snorkel on the right side of his blonde head. What he didn't use were fins...kept kicking them off and we'd have to dive to retrieve them. So we just sort of pulled him around. He loved it! But for the one helping him, there was a lot of clearing and adjusting of the mask to do. We took turns. He's with his mom in that pic.

Lenora, you are right....4 day cruise, just one day on land in Cozumel. Cruises aren't really my thing...I'm sure I disappointed them by not buying any of the drinks they offered in fancy containers every 5 minutes, not buying any jewelry in the glitzy shops, not spending more than a few minutes and less than $20 in the smoky casino....won $35 on the penny slots and cashed out, ha, ha.

Martha, we did the one excursion near Puerta de Maya....the museum and the marine park. Sparkle, we didn't do the dolphin encounter, although that was an option for an additional cost. We brought our own snorkel gear and spent our time there snorkeling (and retrieving Ben's fins  )

Tina, maybe next winter by RV?

Wonderful photos, Liz.....Brought back memories of our cruise in 1998....Our son graduated from HS....left him at home to go to the prom, Ernie & I went on our cruise to celebrate!!!!  In the spring of 2001 we went to Cancun for a week....loved that, too....We prefer staying aboard ship versus going ashore when cruising....

The cruises I have been on they timed them so the ship gets to an island during the night or early morning. You have from about 8 or 9 in the morning until about 5 in the afternoon in port. If you go on the excursions you are in a rush to do whatever and get back to the ship. Depending on where you leave from you might be 2 or 3 days at sea getting back. I don't find there is much I want to do on the ship except eat and you can only do so much of that. If you are on one of the really big ships that can't dock somewhere you are among 3,000 people being shuttled to shore and back. You spend more time doing that than on shore.

I have been to Jamaica twice and I wouldn't get off the ship if I ever go there again. I realize it is a really poor country and they depend on tourism but it freaks me out to have someone in my face all the time.

The only cruise I would consider going on sometime is the one to Alaska. My friends try to get me to go on a cruise every year but I'm about cruised out.

I'm with y'all. I had my cruisin days. And it is awesome to be spoiled on board, and go out during the day on port. I've been to Hawaii 3 times and have gotten off to visit all the islands. It was wonderful, considering we can't get our rigs from here to there. Then, I did the inside passage of Alaska, but missed a lot of the interior. Would love to see Denali. Then, there was the Caribean. I really don't care to see all the poverty when I'm on vacation (call me a snob). A little girl even wanted to braid my hair for $5.00/braid. And my hair is short! lol

Liz, great photos and thanks for sharing :) Glad you are having a great time with your family. Mexico is truly beautiful. It's on my list with wheels under my butt! ;) I've crossed the border in Progreso nuevo on foot, and it was intimidating with all the tanks and sandbags, but it was safe. Next time, I'll try the Baja. You just have to watch the border crossings these days. There are still a lot of safe places from what I hear.

Love,
Sharon

But Sharon, if you noticed the tanks and guns were pointed INTO Mexico. The next time we went into Progreso they were gone. I don't know if they were expecting something or if it was just a military exercise. Well we'll find out how Baja is in a couple of weeks! :D

We have not seen one tank or any aggressive military. Have seen some trucks with soldiers in them - just driving around. We crossed at the Nogalas truck bypass - so didn't go through the town.
Back to cruises - took one through the Panama Canal a few years ago. When ever we stopped at a port we were told to be back on the boat at such and such a time. And the boat left then - when they said they would. Well our last stop one lady came running down the dock after the ship had pulled away. Too bad. A tug boat brought her out to the ship and she had to stand on the rail of the tug and step across the open water to be pulled in a door on the side of the ship. BUT FIRST she passed her shopping bags over. And she was a very big older woman. The guys on the tug pushing her rear and the guys on the boat pulling. (she was wearing a life jacket but...)Provided quite a bit of entertainment for the rest of us. I don't think I could have done it. Both boats were moving up and down.....
